Our attack is overly-coached

My mate who is a Liverpool season ticket holder says Quansah is a pretty good defender, he’s just slow. He ultimately said he rated him.

Not sure how accurate that assessment is but it’s the polar opposite to what I thought. Thought he was a big quick guy that couldn’t defend.

A calm cool and collected defender is what we need back there. We’ve got enough aggression back there in Gabriel, Mosquera and Hincapie.
Basically the English Per Mertesacker

Again, I propose getting rid of tags and threadmarks and letting the great unwashed of A-M find their own updates.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing you devolve this summer.

Long overdue imo. You mods are too nice, p4p this is the worst forum in the world with the worst posters in the world. I include myself in that.

City won a treble with 4 CBs and we won a league title with it. But yeh what do they know.
Meh, doesn’t mean it’s the only way to win. In fact more teams have won trophies with fullbacks in fullback than with CBs in fullback.

So…?

Also Pep did it as part of his constant evolution, guy has won loads with normal fullbacks too. As for Arteta it’s like he fell in love with it after Pep did it but there’s no evolution there. Just seems to be stacking the squad with them.

He won't be as good as Per, tbh.

Mert was the slowest man I have ever seen play football (and I include my Chelsea supporting scumbag of a "father" in that) who played in the **** system for defenders (Arsène's 2010s vibes era) when Big Wengz randomly just went "right no more DMs, a midfield full of number 10s, the second slowest player of all time as my CF and everyone in the opponents half at all times...good luck lads!" ...and when Mertesacker asked him if he could at least get a solid fullback beside him, Wenger told him he is getting Kieran Gibbs and liking it!

And somehow Per wasn't a disaster (until he mentally gave up in 15/16) in that system, literally everything was against...but he somehow was quality for us 😅

This lad feels like Holding, can see him getting sent off in the game that costs us the title or something.

What happened to getting Konza at least ffs?

Pep won things with Walker, Cancello, Mendy and Zinchenko, which helped them play beautiful attacking football. Walker had the best recovery pace but Cancelo and Zinchenko made many defensive mistakes which saw them lose important games in the CL IIRC. When he moved to CBs and Walker he was essentially saying 'I will put the best possible defender in each defensive position and not accept anyone who can't stop the opposition'. Arteta has seemingly learned from this and started to freeze out players who's defensive lapses lead to us conceeding, primary Zinchenko but also MLS/Eze for a period

Fullbacks are essentially failed wingers. It's no coincidance that Ashley Cole was arguably the best 2 way fullback in the last 20 years and was coached by the best coached defense in PL history in Adams, Keown, Dixon and Winterburn, I forget if Bould was still there. Cole was also a failed winger but was coached in George Graham's defensive methods instilled on our defense. Nowadays it's rare to find a fullback as good defensively as Cole, but you can plug a centre back in there who's athletic and good on the ball and you have a rock solid back 4.

So I think we could go for a natural fullback, providing they're well enough drilled but that will be the only scenario we go for it. Ironically Tierney was very good in his last few months here. Someone also pointed out the other day that Calafiori started as an LB and has definitely played there if that's an error.

It should be noted that with both Quansah and Hincappie played as either LCB or RCB in a back 3 of a possession based side, which required them to have more forward and flanking movement than CBs that play in a back 2 or a defensive back 3. So there's certainly method to the tactic, of wanting players who can play going forward while playing wide.

Sure - but I don't think it warrants the criticism given that the CB route has worked to produce the best defence in the league.

Personally, I don't see the clamour. Fullbacks have traditionally been the weakest players on the pitch and for good reason. They're not as good defensively as CB's and not as good offensively as wingers. They're just there as a position to fill. Very rarely do you get fullbacks who are genuinely a value add and the talent pool is incredibly small to choose from - being good defensively and offensively is way too unrealistic.

If you're able to land a top class fulback then sure - go for it - but failing that, strong defenders is a solid compromise.

Outside of Hakimi and Mendes - how many top class fullbacks are there? The market is worse than the winger market.

I see a lot of bold claims on AM, but that is close to taking the cake.

You sure you don't want to walk that back?

They already rejected our approach according to German media. I think we just gonna end up paying villa what they want.
Dunno, Villa a tricky club to deal with. In a world where we sign Cala and Hincapie for 40m, nobody tells me you can’t get cover for a relatively decent fee. But no, we’re looking for prem proven plug and play and potentially paying 20m extra for reduced quality and little upside. It’s short sighted.

Why don't you walk forward and have a crack at dismantling the argument.

Argue about a claim as ludicrous as "Fullbacks have traditionally been the weakest players on the pitch"?

I'd genuinely rather watch rewatch our 24/25 league campaign on loop.

Sorry.

We not looking for cover. We looking for a starter next to Saliba next few months and who knows when Saliba comes back

Exemplifies my point. No need to look for prem proven when there’s better players out there for less money. We’ve proven that already; defenders who needed little introduction to make an immediate impact. I’ve just named them.

He will get rinsed by pacy wingers if we play him on right, we need a right back more than a CB. I don't think timber and white can play 60 odd games.

Someone like hinshelwood will make more sense.

I understand he's a great player and it seems like he's everywhere but you've made a bit of a hash of this.
