Jason Ayto’s Transfer Targets: January 2025

Is Liam Delap someone we should be watching? Feel like he could be a good player at CF and possible Saka backup ?
Defo someone to keep an eye on. Proper PL CF. Will defo be at a big 6 club sooner rather than later but could just as easily see him join a team on the fringes. Objectively speaking, I think a darkhorse team I'd like to see him at is Fulham. Think Jimenez is a good striker but Delap could be the missing ingredient for them (outside of another decent defender) to push them up a level as they need guys to stick the ball away and Delap's already showing he can do it in the Prem for a team that isn't creating as much as they'd like. Hutchinson plays AM for them and is doing OK but outside of that not much.

Xavi Simons isn't good enough, if we sign more midfielders they need to be of Ødegaard's quality or Nwaneri's talent level. He's neither. Hard pass.

Also he looks like he's about to burst into tears at any given time. We already have Jesus for that.
I like Xavi Simons a lot but I actually agree with this. Don't think he moves the needle for us if Ethan's gonna be a major factor, and we've already nailed our mast to guys like Merino and co. If anything, we'll possibly be wanting another holder/8 (again) soon. #5 and Jorginho could end up staying but if we're serious, we'd only be keeping one of them (and I already know who I'd keep). It should be Lewis-Skelly but Arteta and his galaxy brain BS probably gonna keep us from that for the foreseeable.

Since Nwaneri’s emergence I don’t think we need Simons anymore. Simons gives us something on the LHS but ultimately is a central player which both Nwaneri and Ode are.

Imo we need someone more deep positionally. Whether it be a no8 or no6 (depending on the plan for Rice long term).

Someone who really ups our technical ceiling but in CM. A CM and LW raising our technical profile are the things I will be judging arteta on next summer.

Delap is an absolute unit whose got some technique in a position that we're definitely looking to reinforce, so I'd be shocked if we weren't considering him to a degree. Question is though if he's really ready to explode at a big team to win now or if he'd just be a 2-3 project.

Seen a link to Cunha today who I think is class. He's basically the platonic ideal of what a fit and in form prime Jesus would offer, so could also see the club seeing him as an option for the summer.

Cunha is not a striker and we don’t need another non striker at the club. He’s having a decent spell, but not what we need
We need someone at a higher level then Cunha I do agree, higher then Wolves level in particular.

Every time I watch Isak he just reminds me he’s the one. His close control and dribbling ability would really cook in our system

We don’t really play the ball in behind quick enough for him to get the 1v1 situations he does at Newcastle, it would require us to change the way we play a bit.

That could benefit us, or it could make things worse for guys like Ødegaard and Saka.

The more I think of midfield the more difficult I think it’ll be to recruit there tbh. In my mind Merino and Rice are to be the main stays at 8 & 6, with 1 of TP5 or Jorgi leaving. Then you have MLS and Nwaneri pretty much mapped out to fill those roles as well, MLS certainly being a footballing TP5 regen.

I’d think someone like Zubi blocks that but also probably has to play week in week out and with Rice & Merino that’ll be difficult.

I’ll get hate, but unless merino is a squaddy and Rice is an 8, we need a Trossard type signing. Someone who’s fine with rotation, but can step up at Arsenal and be solid and available.

I’d rather we invest in MLS and Ethan than block their paths.

I see Kai in plenty of situations in which, if he could turn, we'd be really dangerous.

It's not about the 1v1 situations but his ability to beat and drag players out of position

I’ve always seen Merino as elite depth rather than a mainstay starter, that’s why I’m seeing it this way where we need a baller in CM.

Appreciate that we have MLS but maybe he can take Merino’s minutes in the squad in a few years. I think that would work out time wise by the time MLS matures. More and more minutes until then.

If we wanna be a serious team we need more in CM for me. Merino was always a floor raiser ‘first 16’ player for me.

I do think Merino is going to be a nailed on starter when he gets going, he really looks tailored for that role.

Given what we need to do in attack, I don’t think signing a baller in midfield is worth the funds unless there’s some shrewd deal to be had.

Fwiw if that baller was Thiago type deal then yeah.

Again, as it stands and whether people like it or not, MLS is a LB.

Arsenal Quotes

When we won the title on May 3-rd by beating Everton 4-0 as Tony Adams scored that iconic goal, we showed everyone and especially Manchester United that we could beat them. Thirteen days later, when we beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup final in the legendary Wembley Stadium, it was wonderful... I felt immensely proud for the team, for the club: this was the fantastic response I was able to give to those who had put their confidence in me, as well as those who had put me through all those difficult weeks when I first arrived.
