Nothing to do with the power of hindsight. He done nothing on loan and shone bright in a world cup. History teaches us never buy anyone on the back of a good major tournament. The eyes of the world are on you for three games. It's easy to play above your ability.
Campbell was on the world stage and carried his side, thats a great feat. This came on the back of a successful loan spell in which he shone at times in the CL.

Imo either keeping him or selling him was alright as there was a chance he could be a good player for us. Lets be honest it's not like he was holding us back from signing a top winger, we dilly dally in the market usually
