Tbh, if anything this makes the Galatasaray people look racist. They hear monkey and the first thing their mind goes to is racism. There weren't even any African players on their bench.

I think they had one black player on the pitch and one on the bench so as you correctly say, the racism in this case was injected by them.

Given José's history, I don't think there was any racial connotation whatsoever to what he said. If I'm not mistaken, he still spends part of every offseason in Africa visiting former players and doing charity work with no fanfare and he's been a pretty vocal advocate for the merits of African football over the years.

I've never heard a whiff of an allegation of racism about Jose and there would have been at least one by now like there is about Pep for example. I think this is a bit of nastiness from Galatasaray to be honest and it's in really poor taste.

Yeah it's why as much as I despised him at Chelsea and he's a bit of a tit sometimes between the lines, I have a lot of time for him as a human being. He seems like a genuinely decent person outside of football.

There's also a reason his players love him. I don't think I've ever heard one of his players or ex-players speak bad about him.

That's always been a big difference between him and Guardiola. Players certainly respect Guardiola and probably admire him as a tactician, but are there many players who really like him as a person?

Guardiola's man management is legendary so that's a bit of a weird point IMO. It takes unreal people skills to maintain the levels with largely the same players for so long, he's manages to assemble squads of class players that are all willing to play rotational minutes for years etc.

Obviously helps he wins everything and all that but as cringey as he is as a person you really can't fault him in this area.

I'm sure there are some but there are very few outside of maybe Wenger who I feel are more beloved by ex-players basically to a man than Jose.

Yeah for sure. I think even Özil loves him and he used to be ruthless with him. I do definitely get the sense though with the way he speaks about his former players and the way they speak about him that he makes a tangible impression on their lives beyond just football. Guys speak about him the same way George Weah speaks about Arsène. Sometimes the theatrics make you lose sight of it but there's a lot more evidence that he's a good guy than a bad one.
