I'm probably in a very small minority here but I don't think CB or CM is the most pressing issue, I think replacing Özil is the most important thing.

Özil at his best was able to take the ball from midfield and make those killer passes. He had the vision and the technique to create chances. He's doing that less and less often and he's leaving soon anyway. Behind him you have Smith-Rowe and Willock. Do either of them have that exceptional vision and ability to make that killer pass? I'm not sure.

Ceballos is also an attack-minded midfielder, you could take him on loan again. He has the potential to be a good passer, but he's more of a dribbler.

Personally what I think the squad needs is a young attacking midfielder with exceptional vision and technique, someone who can create chances. Who that is I have no idea.

Hassam Auoar would fit that profile. Wouldn't be cheap though. Maybe Van de Beek also but he's been getting tracked by Real Madrid.

Both those players aren't typical number 10's, they're more like forward thinking number 8's. I feel like thats the direction we should be going in tbh. Hardly anyone plays a traditional no.10 in this league anymore.

Yeah perhaps, but you still need someone with vision, right?

I was watching this video of ESR and he looks like a very promising young player, but his standout trait here is dribbling. He isn't getting his head up and looking for killer passes, which indicates he might be better as an 8 than a 10. Willock too probably isn't a 10.

Whereas you look at this of Ødegaard and his vision is outstanding. He's always looking to make that killer pass to break open a defence. Just using Ødegaard as an example, he's probably not available. But that sort of player is what we're lacking imo.

Ødegaard would be a fantastic replacement for Özil, but I think his loan deal with Sociedad is for two years. Don't know how hard it is to terminate such a contract halfway through.

Aouar would be a dream signing. VdBeek has a good passing range on him, but the killer pass isn't his main weapon. Rather it's timing and positioning. He has a very good all-round technique and vision though.

I would want two types of nr8's. One all-action midfielder with good technique and engine (vdBeek ór Partey) and one creative passer/dribbler (Aouar/Foden/Golovin perhaps). Both need to be able to contribute in defense in the modern game.

I see Aouar as City bound, though. So perhaps we could tempt Foden because that would foil any chance of him to finally break through in the starting XI.

Ødegaard would be an exciting signing.

I think there is a way to make playing with advanced number 8's work. I know they're a special case but Liverpool barely even have a very forward thinking player in their entire midfield 3 (Wijnaldum isnt exactly a technician). If you could lets say play a DLP, with someone like Partey and an attacking CM in front it could be very balanced and make us a more direct side. I feel like because of our 4231 we always end up pinning back teams. But thats actually become their technique vs us, because we play such an attacking formation but we dont really have the technical ability to back it up. So they just soak up pressure then punish us on the break, we're just confused identity wise these days. Özil has mostly lost it, Auba at LW can barely dribble, Pepe is a wide man and needs space, and then our CMs are dog ****.

Wouldnt it be better to fix our midfield, play a more balanced 433, and invite a little bit more pressure but subsequently get more space for our dangerous pacey players to make use of? If you want to play an unbalanced attacking side you better have the players to do it. Man City have KDB, Bernardo, D. Silva, Gundogan, Foden. They can afford to that, and so did the older Arsenal side (even though we didnt win anything playing that way) with Fabregas Nasri and co. Right now our squad isn't at that technically so we should adapt.

Yeah I'd love if we got Ødegaard, elite talent, but he'll break into Real's team soon enough imo, he's that good.

Imagine Partey x Auoar :(

We won’t sign neither. Pretty sure.
I strongly doubt Auoar, but I have hope for Partey. There's been way too much noise. Im in the fix the no.8/10 position next season camp anyway.

We need to sort CB CM and maybe ST if people leave. Too much to do in such a weird window. If we do a good job this summer maybe we can really focuse on a marquee Özil replacement next summer. Thats the hope anyway.

Kai Havertz then?

Yeah he's absolutely phenomenal. He can not only make those killer passes but he can also get into the box himself and score. He's like a crazy hybrid of Özil, Ramsey and Dele Alli. No chance we get him though.

Yeah Ødegaard will probably stay another year at Sociedad then return to Madrid. Foden is a strange one. It seems like he's constantly feted up there at City but still not given enough minutes on the pitch. It's as if they like the idea of him more than the reality of actually playing him. If they bought Aouar that would certainly be the end for Foden, he should look elsewhere for regular minutes.

Perhaps i'm still stuck in the Wenger mindset, but I just sort of automatically assume that Arsenal should play a certain way, that we should have at least one very technical no. 10. But you're right, there are other ways to play good and effective football.

Yeah, the thing is we can maybe return to that in the long term (or at least the modern version of that). But I think we are wasting points pretending to still be like that when our squad quality clearly can't hack it.

People like Xhaka, Martinelli, Saka, Pepe, Auba (even Özil imo) are suited to a direct system.

In my opinion everything changed in terms of the way we should play when Santi got injured. We moved to a direct long ball specialist in Xhaka, but still tried to play slow build up play passing football. Even our key players at the time in Alexis + Özil were players more suited to quicker tempos. They may have been talented but the reason why Alexis left Barca was because his close touch football wasnt up to scratch, and Özil was most successful in direct sides like Germany and Madrid. And don't get me started on Ramsey, he's a very clever player but he's not exactly a playmaker in the traditional mould. We won those FA cups through our quality alone, it was the beginning of our demise in terms of identity and style of play though.

Watching our current team try to play "The Arsenal Way" is kinda funny actually...

Well, kind of funny and kind of sad...
