Amazing framing by Dyer here. As if Crystal Palace owe Guehi and Liverpool the transfer.

I hear what he’s saying in terms of Guehi’s conduct as he’s been professional throughout but it does beg the question, why didn’t Liverpool try to secure the deal earlier?

Honestly on the bigger scale of things, I don’t think this whole trying to force a player to stay by these lesser clubs is going to go down well going forward. Take someone like Harry Kane and Son they wasted away their best years and didn’t win anything in that peak period to just stick around for CL qualification and the odd victory against a top 6 side because they tried to be professional when they should have in fact forced a move elsewhere to win something. I would have certainly done it as these clubs and owners are slimy as ****.

To me I think the logical course of action here is for all players to start asking for release clauses in the contracts.

I’m amazed it’s not more common in the prem tbh. It’s such an obvious thing to do for a player who rates himself and is moving to a smaller club like Tottenham.

Palace sitting there, knowing big clubs are hovering around their players and they don’t have replacements somewhat identified just rubs me the wrong way.

Liverpool leaving it last minute when they have the funds as well was bad, something Arsenal would do actually.

Imagine making the next step of your career, but some suit who can’t do your job tells you were too sh*t for you to leave.

Guehi is proof that nice guys finish last anyways.

VVD is the Henry of CB's in PL terms.

I think he's at a level no other defender has touched in this league. It's like men against boys with him.
How much of that though is because he's playing against strikers who don't hold a candle to what came before him? I think we have to factor in the difference in the way the game is played and the quality of strikers then vs now.

The Campbells, Rios and Terrys of the world were dealing mostly with 442s where you don't really have any help with the 9 and those 9s were the Henry, Drogba, Torres, Suarez tier of players that really doesn't exist today. Isak is probably the best striker in the league and he might not have been top 5 10-15 years ago.

Bit of a problem if big clubs can just demand players at a whim though. If thats going the case then every contract should just have a release clause for CL teams that has to be triggered by a certain date and forget about negotiating at all. You want the player, pay the clause in time or look elsewhere.

Might even help establish some parity which this sport desperately needs imo.

I agree, personally I feel players should be pushing that release clauses should be mandatory in their contracts similar to Spain imo as the whole gentleman’s agreement is a massive finesse. Would you trust a snake oil salesman like Daniel Levy if he gave you his word that you could leave if you done x, y or z? I wouldn’t even choose Sp**s if I was a footballer given the way he’s treated players in the past.

I know we fumbled the Luis Suarez deal and it worked out for him in the end but the way the whole saga was handled seemed pretty pathetic to me. I genuinely think they gave him their word similar to Isak yet they lied and shifted their stance as it didn’t suit them. Wissa and Isak are viewed as villains now but they got their moves and are happy whereas a good guy like Guehi got done dirty here.

I feel a bit sorry for Guehi and I feel sorry for Glasner as well.

While I'm certainly grateful to Palace for taking Nketiah off of our hands and the speed with which they sold us Eze, it seems to me that they've acted quite poorly now two summers in a row with regards to recruitment.

They also very much knew they were in the same boat with Guehi as with Eze and they should have gotten their own incomings done quicker with the writing on the wall since their FA Cup Parade. Players who help you secure your first bit of silverware ever should not be left hanging like this on deadline day and IMO it's a bad look.

Maybe Liverpool could have acted faster but everyone knew they were coming in for him and Glasner was asking for reinforcements even if he didn't go. After receiving the Eze money, they really should have gotten in gear and made it so the guy could get his move.

But you don't care that a defense that has looked vulnerable against vastly inferior teams to us had no trouble with us because it's Liverpool away and that somehow means more than the form they're in or the personnel they have out there. Got it.
tbf the attacking personnel we had out there for most of the match was Martinelli, Gyokeres, Madueke and Merino. 3 of those 4 aren't in our best possible setup, furthermore two of them are new. Even if we could have played Eze/Gyokeres/Saka/Ødegaard it would have been their first time playing together.

People have been complaining about the attack forever, and we made moves to address it, but integrating the new guys and establishing cohesiveness is going to take time. Especially with our opening set of fixtures. OT, Anfield, City and Newcastle aren't exactly ideal opportunities to "work on things." Saka and Ødegaard getting injured also doesn't help. Fixing the attack is going to start with the latter quartet above having a good run of 5 or 10 games to get a baseline and we can go from there. Until that happens we are going to have to lean on the defense and the totality of the squad to pump out results.

Did Eze look like he was having any trouble adapting to us when he came on? Nwaneri has played more minutes in midfield this preseason and this season than Merino. It was poor team selection and it's not excusable. Total self-inflicted wound.
