Should Ødegaard stay or go?

  • Keep him

  • Sell him

People said the same thing about Özil's chance creation as they say about Ødegaard's though, in that the chances were dismissed as meaningless if they didn't become assists. Özil went through periods of the assists drying up but his chance creation remained pretty consistent if I recall. And people hated him for it.
You can create chances without necessarily being a ‘creative’ player, Saka by his crossing alone tops a lot of chance creation stats and someone like Mbappe does too by just having good final third decision making and being able to create space.

Someone mentioned earlier that Ode picks up the ball and tends to look for Saka. Maybe it’s our system but he very rarely makes me say “wow how did he see that pass” like the guys you’d typically call creative would.

Creates chances without being creative. It’s hard to explain but whose who get it, get it!

Well I guess I just disagree there (or just don't get it lol). I find Ode does lost of tricky little passes in around the box, including backheels, etc. Ode isn't crossing much like Saka either, so those chances created must be coming from something other than that.

I think the one thing he struggles with in comparison to Özil though is consistent weight on his balls, like you mentioned earlier. Definitely overhits them at times.

I think Ode has that in his locker for sure, I believe he’s just instructed to not take too many risks. One of his best traits is turning infield then playing a reverse ball through for Saka or whoever is at CF.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying so at this point who even knows the debate is anymore

Think @A_G is right and it’s probably the rigidity of the system.

I told you so

I get what you mean. The original post talks about how smooth he is on the ball and on the half turn, this is true, but once he gets that bit out of the way, he tends to take 5, 6, 7 touches too many, often trying to beat the same man twice, or running towards Saka and White to offload a pass he could have made straight away.

This is where Özil and Cesc differ, decision making, speeding up the tempo through passing, taking multiple defenders out of the game through passing. The introduction of Jorginho vs Liverpool helped us with this, he was the one playing one touch where he could, speeding up our passages of play, being incisive.

Ødegaard can do this, but often takes too long on the ball, letting defenders settle. We haven’t seen crosses like the one vs Palace to Martinelli a few years ago often enough. We haven’t seen enough first time passes like the one to Havertz vs Liverpool.

He a fabulous footballer, but like you, I’m not sure if he’s as creative as others suggest.

Yeah I think this is mostly true. Cesc and Özil had something almost uncanny about their vision and how quickly they would make a perfect pass that takes out half the opposition team. With Ødegaard you get the sense he has to work a bit more to do what those guys did naturally. But he does the work.

Arsenal Quotes

Ian Wright was the incredible striker for whom those around him sometimes found hard to control especially the opponents. He was an extrovert, hyperactive, and had endured an extremely hard life. His playing style was instinctive, and he had that killer instinct, a player like no other.
