To me having both a left footed RW and RCM and right footed LW and LCM seems counter productive. I get why you might go for one or the other, but to have both positions like that seems a bit regressive to me.

You could almost argue Xhaka was better for out LHS by mere virtue of the fact he was left footed meant he could receive the ball and pass straight away, didn't have turn in onto the other side.

It depends entirely on the profiles of the players.

If your wingers or midfielders can't cut inside and shoot well, it makes no sense to invert them. You're better off playing into their crossing and passing abilities.

Saka, Trossard, and Nwaneri are cut inside and shoot types, though Saka frequently crosses instead and is well rounded enough to excel in any role anyway. Rice could be that, but he doesn't really do it, I think he should trust his shot more in general. Ødegaard, Merino, Martinelli, and Madueke clearly aren't that.

Ødegaard sticks out here, because he's our primary playmaker, so playing him at a spot that would facilitate his passing makes a lot more sense. I think the reason why he's always been playing RCM is the chemistry he has with Saka, but it has resulted in us being very right wing biased and predictable in attack.

I think too much is being made of Ode’s passing angles. I’ve seen him play Martinelli through from r8 plenty of times. He does need to open his body up but that’s got more to do with his first touch than anything else. A quality first touch on his weaker foot on the half turn and then he’d be in the right position already.

Him not having a trivella pass in his locker does him no favours, but what really sucks is how nerfed he is when he gets to the byline down the right.

its very clear even when we only rely on rhs (too predictable) but our rhs still consistent put best performance with free flowing attack in 23/24 that because we have prime ben white which his right foot unlocked saka and Ødegaard

we have player like white right foot which favour his strong foot when play at rhs & we need type of player like that to make us have free flowing attack at rhs

but then ben white get injured in 24/25 the result our rhs so poor (barely make free flowing attack especially in final third) that because we dont have proper player who right foot & white replacement like timber not even close like prime ben white in term of build up & attack in final third especially against low block and mid block not to mentioned white already had strong partnership with saka & Ødegaard since 22/23

now imagine rice move to rhs then we will have 2 player (rice & white) play at rhs who favour their strong foot which mean more free flowing attack

Yeah - we’ve looked better when he’s been on the pitch imo. Thats not shade on Ethan, but Ødegaard’s positioning is levels above for now. It’s just the timing of his release that’s frustrating but then again we haven’t really seen our first choice midfield in anger yet.

I’ll reserve judgement till the season starts ofc but it would be nice if we had some positive signs going into it.

Having both Ødegaard and Nwaneri sharp bodes well for me. That's probably one of the bigger positives so far this season. I still don't like the shape of our midfield overall and both Nwaneri and Ødegaard are going to suffer this season because of it.

With Gyokeres is here he need to release the ball more quicker imo his overall performance still nowhere near to what he was doing before last season but having full pre season is important for him he key player if he we want to win something or compete at least like 22-24 then he has to be back to his best.

He (if you ignore Max) has been the biggest bright spark for me. Absolute gun player, joy to watch him operate.

There was a moment today where he dropped deep to receive it and instantly played the ball straight through a line of opposition press centrally into Merino in acres of space. And then Merino like the ****ing plumber he is instead of recognising that he had time and space on the ball plays it straight back to Ben White who immediately gets put under pressure.

Anyway. There’s “a chance” it all comes together that I’m clinging on to.

It's left midfield yet again. The same positions messing us up. LCM and LW.

Arguably LB is kind of a problem because of how stale the role is becoming. Lewis-Skelly looked far better when he was doing stuff in the centre of the park.

Problem instantly becomes if Zubi is out of the team.

A secondary playmaker is a must. I think the burden is too much for him. We can play with Saka Gyokeres Ødegaard and Eze/Nwaneri and make Saka more of a forward. Two attackers and two attacking midfielders
