I think he was getting pretty unfair treatment on here for most of the season and it verged into personal attacks and ridicule. I didn’t really get involved but I think at a certain point it’s worth standing up for him. People, including yourself iirc, basically question whether he’s medically underweight, even tho he’s a professional footballer and clearly just on the lean side.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. The outright abuse on both sides during Özil wars, Xhaka wars, Pepe. Lacazette etc for me doesn't compare and two minutes in the archives will show that.

I'd have loved for you to pipe up with this stuff when I was copping homophobic abuse from forum regulars over our contentious players but I strongly suspect you were blind to this stuff and only feel upset now that it's Ødegaard.

The sauce gang stuff was a low hanging fruit you could have just called me out if my skinny jokes offended you. The dozens of posts lazily saying A-M don't know ballers noticeably dwarfs the amount of posters saying they aren't impressed so it's not hard to work out.

Just to weigh in on this quickly.

Do you think what you've mentioned is just as disrespectful as Laca being called fat, Lizzo and all the fat/out of breath jokes that insued? I think that's where I struggle to understand your point. Like fat shaming is actually a thing in wider society, skinny/lean shaming isn't.

I’d say they’re both in the same general area of personal ridicule based on appearance. I don’t know if one was worse than the other, maybe Laca’s was more harsh but it doesn’t alter the basic point does it, in both cases it’s personal ridicule.

Yh fat shaming in society is of course a thing, more so for women probably, but for a guy being called a skinny twig is also pretty bad, cos it’s undermining their masculinity. I suspect that’s sort of the point of some descriptions of Ødegaard.

Ideally AM wouldn’t personally ridicule any of our players based on their appearance, unless they are just really crap or bad people in which case fair enough i guess.

Ødegaard won the league and captained Arsenal to a CL final while we were in the Europa league for 7 years straight with Lacazette. He was awful.

Those other guys like Özil and Giroud won a FA Cup but were getting humiliated all the time in big games.

Right now Ødegaard and this group are the best players since the invincible, those 2010s era guys were flops.

Giroud similar to RVP gave his best years to a rival after we had to bear with the come up. Unlike RVP, he did get a lot of abuse on his way up here which may have sped up his leaving actually.

These guys are both different to Ødegaard who looks on the decline now. I dont think theres anymore juice for the next club to squeeze out of him.

Mate I’m not on here like @A_G with his eye of Sauron looking at all posts at all times, I didn’t know you got abuse for any of that and I’m happy to pipe up if I do see it.

I randomly went to page 500 something and one guy called Ode a “Weak, pathetic little weasel”. Jumped to another page and people were talking about his bone density like he’s a polio kid

My only point was it’s all a bit OTT.

I have to say I’ve never considered this. Seems like a bit of a reach to me but I won’t be ignorant and discount the possibility.

I thought it was just because he does appear to be on the skinny side for a footballer + seems to keep picking up injuries + is quite bad in duels.

I can’t believe the amount of polarity this ****er gets even when he’s not playing for us lmao. Genuinely don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it at the club. Theres people that genuinely think he’s our worst midfielder while all of the Brazil team lauds him as the 2nd most important player on the pitch.

I thought it was just because he does appear to be on the skinny side for a footballer + seems to keep picking up injuries + is quite bad in duels.

He is pretty lean, but then he’s a pro footballer at an elite club with the best possible training facilities, dietary supervision and sports science available to him. So it’s basically implausible that he’d be underweight and the club was just letting him be like that.

AM has severe trouble separating banter and normal fan ficklenessm from what is actually opinion.

It's partly the nature of it being a forum and threads and it leading to discussions running long and people coming in without any sort of context to them, since it'd take dozens of pages being read and I think people (myself included) should really practise not assuming some stuff when jumping into discussions.

re: Ødegaard specifically: Every player gets flack here and in the internet at large, but Ødegaard has not caught it to the level of some of other contest guys have previously and that's because he's in a much more stable and successful team.

While Ode gets called a twig or a twink, other players have had their ethnicity and race constantly used against them. Passport jokes, purposely misspelling their names, saying they are part of match fixing mafias, everyone's seen it.

Why are we allowed to hope that Ødegaard goes back to his 22-24 levels with no impetus to do so but anybody who wants to sign Leao or Rashford and hope we can jumpstart their career gets laughed at as a fanboy who just loves signings. Why is the opinion that 27 year old Ødegaard might have seen the best of his days as a 23 year old blasphemy but 28yo rashford and 27yo Leao are undoubtedly finished at the top level?

Ode is an Arsenal player and captain we obviously have good reasons to hope he comes back into form. Rashford is a Utd problem if Ode was a Utd player I don’t think anyone would be saying he’s been in poor/indifferent form let’s sign that guy. Nobody likes it when we sign similar players from Chelsea. Ode is different because he’s already here plus we watch him play a lot more than we do the other two so we know what he’s about.

Just watched a video of Pablo Zabaleta praising Ødegaard. It's 10 minutes long though so not going bother posting here due to attention span issues in the A-M user base.

Seems he's maybe a footballers' footballer, if you know what I mean. If you have to ask you'll never know, etc.

2 years left on his contract so you either back him to be here for the next 3-4 years on even higher wages or you look to move him on off the back of a decent WC.

For me the last couple of years don't justify putting him on £300k a week or whatever he'll want for the next 4-5 years.
