Newcastle's second goal was caused by Dragusin backing off whilst Romero holding the line (as he would if VVD was there). The system puts defenders under so much pressure, particularly defenders who are not playing regularly.

Their strategy is clear in the way they play. They want to force the game into their favour and by doing so, shake opposition out of their defensive setup and into taking risks. This creates the space to exploit further with their constant attacking play.
Think teams like Leverkussen, older City and title winning Liberpool. So win games by holding the ball and attacking with it consistently.
It’s a good strategy against teams who aren’t as technically sound as you are, and will be forced to defend for long spells. But it’s not as good against teams who have similar to better possession and defensive organisation.
Sp**s will do better against lesser teams in the league for the time being again. Only to come unstuck against the top teams. Until the lesser teams find the holes in their system of course.
