He's probably feels like when Rooney said this: "It’s mad how quick it changed. For me to go in with Duncan [Ferguson], Stubbsy [Alan Stubbs], all of them who I grew up watching, to then go and play with them, train with them every day and play with them, and then so quickly, I remember thinking: 'These are crap!'"

I don’t expect starts but minutes this season will be interesting. He’s still only 16 so we have to be careful, but also he’s not a regular 16 yr old and should be treated by what he can bring to a game. Also he looks so much stronger now, so hopefully he’ll get plenty of mins.

He's got composure that you very rarely see even from wonderkids. It's extremely uncommon to see someone his age playing football at the highest level at his own pace and not looking like anything is happening too quickly for him. A low bar of course but his decision making is already miles ahead of someone like Madueke or Nelli.

I don’t believe in holding back elite talents. If he’s ready, he should play. But he still lacks a bit of physicality and decision making to start regularly in the PL

I think you could be wrong. I can imagine he will be starting against City and Coventry. If he shines there he could play much more.

I also think they will take it careful but still... If he's better than Madueke, he should be starting.

How many 16 year olds have played a major role for a club at the top level? Yamal, Fabregas, and Rooney are the three that come to mind. All to say, we should temper expectations because he may stagnate this year. But everything suggests he is the real deal.

Yamal was younger, birthday in July so was 16 for all of his first top flight season.

Fabregas was slightly older, 17 all season, birthday is May.

Rooney was 16 but turned 17 in October, same as Ansu Fati.

those two are basically the same as Dowman, he'll turn 17 in December.

so could also include players like Camavinga, Nuri Sahin, Cubarsi, Donnarumma. apparently Alex Song too.

Would James Milner be able to contribute at a Champions League level club at 16? Rooney was at Everton but it was obvious he was good enough to play a role at a bigger club even at that age like Cesc and Yamal. It's just so hard that even Giggs, Messi, Owen, Ronaldo all were 17 or 18 before they contributed at big clubs.

I love to watch Dowman play as he's exciting and when he's on the ball, I expect something to happen as I do when Saka plays. We need more players like this. Last season, I felt he didn't play enough. This season, it may well be about carefully managing his minutes to protect him physically.

I'm not convinced. Like he's clearly talented, but the level of hype isn't warranted from what i've seen so far.

Completely agree. People talk like he's comparable to Yamal and not far off young Messi FFS. Loads to learn.
