I'm not making excuses, Arsène over achieved by every measurable metric for his spend. The fact that you can't see that and are measuring him against your own made up standards doesn't really interest me any more.

Last season Liverpool were in the top 3 in the UK and top 7 in Europe for the amount of money they'd spent assembling that squad. The figures are here.

Pfft so you keep moving the goalposts whenever your previous example is refuted. So whenever it suits you it's net spend, and whenever it doesn't it's just regular spending.

Nobody told Arsène not to spend, or at least he never implied he wasn't getting the backing he was seeking.

The squad investment is just an accumulation of spending over the number of years it takes to build the squad. There’s no moving of goal posts. It’s a better way of looking at the figures really. Some are with a squad for a long time, like Hazard at Chelsea. He was on their net spend figure in 2012, but still appeared as part of their squad investment figure in 2018. And why not, he was still playing.

Right, I agree with this line of thinking, and when we look at post-invincibles Wenger era, we have to factor in the fact that Arsenal was clearly a top 2 side with a top 2 squad. That status gradually declined and it's weird to suggest that Arsène had nothing to with it.

We're not operating on anything like an equal footing with the Manchester clubs financially, so are relying on Klopp performing miracles and being perfect in the transfer market. You can't do that year in year out.

Hopefully Klopp can build a second great side here over the next couple of years, but not without the financial backing.

He also needs to be ruthless in rebuilding the squad and moving a few on.

Replace Klopp with Wenger and add Chelsea's russian money to the mix, and you see the miracle the big man performed from 2006 onwards

How we’re we a top 2 side?:lol::lol: You’ve just made that up. You can’t debate with people that make stuff up, it’s like arguing with Trump supporters and their fake news. Here’s some actual facts. Look at our spending between 2004 and 2013 . . . Portsmouth level! We competed because of our manager’s incredible buying and selling and competing with teams he had no right to be. Top 4 every year over that period was absolutely remarkable. You saying it was decline is complete ****. You’ve no evidence at all. Just your own prejudice.

I think this is when Fergie realised Wenger was a massive threat to him, look at how rattled he is.
That’s what you can do at 70 if you get up at 5.30 am, run 10K, work at the weights and eat a mountain of salads with steaks and fish.

What a man? And what a manager?
