No one ever had to make excuses for Cesc. You didn’t have to be a genius football coach to see what he brings to the team like some go on about Özil.
Even in a side full of stars, I used to look at Cesc and think 'thank **** we've got him'. His name on the sheet inspired confidence. Özil may have done that in a different way for others, but Cesc was in-your-face quality.

Still think Cesc was helped by having a parade of top class strikers he could assist.

All Özil had meanwhile was Giroud.

Tbf Cesc's best season was 09/10 when Van Persie was injured for most of it and Bendtner was starting week in week out.

07/08 Cesc was deffo the best all around. Though his 09/10 until he inevitably fell off after Christmas was ridiculous as well.

Think overall it's a bit misguided to compare Özil and Cesc's Arsenal careers. Cesc was breaking through for us and had it all to prove for the world, he was utterly energetic and unstoppable at times. Meanwhile Özil took the step down from Real Madrid, which may have been a factor to him not being as good as we know he can be for longer periods than it has been the case. Cesc was similar for Chelsea after he flopped at Barca, one good season aside.

Bottom line is, both have been magic for us, and I would've killed to see them in the same starting lineup for us.

Will always have a soft spot for Cesc’s 04-05 mullet season aswell, he was just so unbelievable as a 17 year old...then that of course led to his 2006 Champions League performances

Giroud was a little underrated, he was no Henry or RVP but still a good player...if we consistently played with two wingers instead of just one in Sanchez, his time here would have been better...wasn’t there a period in 14-15 Giroud went on a scoring run, eventually wining player of the month, with this team...

...that team kind of covers Giroud’s weaknesses, and highlights his strengths.

In my personal opinion this thing about "he had better strikers on the end of his passes and it therefore made him look better" (or visa versa) doesn't necessarily mean too much in terms of judging a player. At the end of the day you will be able to see a player's quality when they are on the ball and what they do with it. The only thing I would imagine is affected is the amount of assists. But in terms of watching the club every game you can see how important a player is regardless.

With Özil, he had a great partnership with Alexis which negated the fact we had an immobile striker (who has proven recently how much he helps a side outside of goalscoring anyway). He has recently had Auba and Laca.

I'd say how well a number 10 plays is about the system around him. Our slow build up play doesnt suit Özil. Even though he is a technical player, he is better suited to quick fast paced transitions. Not such a slow build up speed. As we do play that style, we need someone who can keep hold of the ball and control the game, supplying Özil in dangerous positions in the process. Santi did that beautifully and Xhaka can't, so if we are talking about players who would have helped Özil flourish then I would probably look behind him in front of ahead.

We don't have any proper #10's playmaker these days, Özil is the only one but a top class one on his day, if we want to win we've got to have Özil as playmaker central & we've got to get the ball to him as much as possible.

And to think we could have had Cesc, Özil and Santi at the same time..

Soft midfield, would have been wrecked by many teams. Can't believe there's anyone who would want Cesc and Özil playing at the same time, and goes to show how tactically naive the vast majority of fans are.

Newsflash, Özil wasn't better for Madrid as he was for us. Why did you think Perez was eager to move on from him? They were easily able to find an upgrade from him with a mere Di Maria, who then ended up being ditched too.
