Yeah but the issue with Gundogan is way more severe, and not worth the outlay imo

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...-to-challenge-Man-Utd-for-Ilkay-Gundogan.html

The German international suffers from spondylolisthesis, a deformity in his lower back that can lead to hamstring injuries, and he was sidelined for over a year.

It's been 2 seasons since he's had any back related injuries/issues for Dortmund.

He's missed just 3 games this whole season, 2 of them being rests and the other due to illness. He's been crucial for Tuchel's high-intensity system along with Mkhitaryan, both being dependable members of the spine of the team (no pun intended).

Carrick on the other hand has been a walking sicknote, understandably so as he's getting on.

Gundogan, especially looking at the way he's playing this season - he'd walk into most midfield's in Europe.

Xhaka is iffy, he's not quick at all but he reads the game very well as well as positioning him self quite well most of the time, but he gives away a lot of fouls, might be because of his aggressive streak.

The thing is he's the anchor in the Gladbach midfield, the player who plays alongside him is more responsible for the active pressing and harrying as well as bursting forward when the opportunity presents itself.

Playing Xhaka alongside Ramsey, Jack or Santi would leave us too open. We play open and expansive football when that breaks down we struggle with transitional pressing which places a heavy burden on the speed and nous of guys like Koscielny and Coquelin. Gladbach play or played tight, compact football meaning situations where Xhaka would be left isolated in the way Coquelin sometimes is rarely happened. This means that Xhaka had the players and thus support around him to cover for his lack of pace, something which, as of now, he wouldn't be provided with at Arsenal. Xhaka alongside Coquelin or Elneny would also leave us with little penetration.

Yeah but the issue with spondylolisthesis itself goes beyond just back injuries. It's non-curable and can affect other parts of the body, like the hamstrings which the article cites. Ultimately in other sports it's proven to be a career ender long term.

Dortmund were pretty much actively shopping him in the summer, and he wasn't exactly reticent in asking for a move. Distrustful myself.

Wouldn't be surprised if this happens...Wenger will be looking for a "mature and experienced head" to replace Arteta, Rosicky and Flamini when they leave.
Personally i'm against it...maybe in 2103 yes, but not now. He'll be 35 and i'd rather get Xhaka, Rabiot or Gundogan.

I had rather extend his contract for a year than him joining Arsenal. He is still our best centre midfielder and no one from our team can pass it from the deep and start attacks like he can as of now.

Getting rid of Flamini and Arteta and sign 34 years old Carrick would make no sense even if he is better than Flamini and Arteta.

Another stopgap.

Can we not just buy a proper ******* midfielder.

Carrick was good in the past, if a little overrated.

Funny enough, we'd have done with someone with his ability today.
This game if more than anything makes me miss cesc fabregas.
