Mikel Arteta: All The President’s Men

How many times did Timber slip at crucial moments as well? Ugh so frustrating.
It's not just his individual mistakes, either. His poor positioning leads to a clustered midfield where our, ya know, midfielders end up having to work around another body that is disrupting passing passing lanes. It leads to a mess where we aren't able to really capitalize like we should be. I'd also point out the shots he has cost Gyok, but I think we've all covered that.

I think he's trying to emulate Calafiori at times but he just doesn't have the same profile.

This is a Mikel problem tbf - Timber is playing the role that Mikel has laid out for him. I don't like it, if he was Hakimi level attacking player I would understand it but we have one of the best RW itw, can we please platform him instead? Timber should be holding the width for support and defending transitions when we lose the ball.

Not sure how we are still trying to figure out how to beat a low block. Pool played 6 in the back and 4 in the middle and were confident we would not score. City played two banks of 5. Other teams play similar blocks and will continue to until we solve the low block challenge.

I don't have solutions, and either does Arteta, but I do know from clear evidence that slowly passing the ball left to right, right to left doesn't work.

Oh for sure. I certainly don't lay the blame entirely at his feet. At the end of the day he is going to do what the gaffer says. It's become clear over the past few games though that it isn't working out. Hoping Arteta sorts this sooner than later.

This is really the big problem of Arteta... TImber play too high and run a lot... If Arteta continues play him like that, it wont improve anything and Timber will get injured

I would not care about our players walking and jogging if they were capable of this but no movement without ball, Ødegaard takes ages to make a pass and Arteta is constantly yelling them to give the ball to Raya. I won’t be surprised if somehow our boring football bottles the league.

if we dont win the league this season i shudder to think how he can regress our flair and limit our risk taking more than he has now , but he does seeem to lower it season by season , somehow . Unfortunately I am old enough to have suffered the famous boring Arsenal under George Graham but i suppose did not matter as much to me then as the thrill travelling all over the country with your mates diluted the low quality of the games. And importantly Graham was still delivering trophies in his last full season (and could well have won the european final 1995 if hadnt been caught in Feb 1995) with a squad containing some pretty shocking players. This squad we have assembled should make any team scared to play us but they all know sit back and watch us pass it around the back whilst our wide players stand on touchline , 1 player comes short for ball and everyone else stands still next to a defender , and try not to concede corners. It is strange when they post the training ground clips packed with lots of quick passing and movement , whats the point as we dont attempt to replicate it on match days. Would love to see players running through just keeper to beat on regular basis but the zubi goal agaisnt villa is a very rare sight nowadays so for now get the ball up the pitch quicker , dont end up with 4 players standing on edge their box within 10 yards each other , take a lot more long shots to bring defenders out to close the attempt and please coach gyokeres how to get in front his defender and attack the ball.

I think also with Timber, teams have cottoned onto the fact he’s limited in the final third, and allowing him to have the ball whilst tightly marking Saka/Ode/Eze.

It feels like in the majority of our games, Timber is on the ball more than anyone, which I don’t believe is a ploy from Mikel, rather the way opponents defend against us.

Yep agree, honestly in hindsight I think we should have given Ben White the start here given we knew how Liverpool were going to set up. Timber had a very good game but with the amount of super dangerous positions he got himself into, he should have done better.

I think Timber finding so much space is because how teams setup for Saka. Its not probably something want as a major factor in our attacking buildup.

Now we can of course try to change how Timber plays but Im not sure it will change a lot how teams face Saka. But you never know.

IMO Saka has been doing fine until maybe last one or two games outside of his final ball and that something that cant be blame on Timber.

Mikel frustrated me here I can’t lie. It was pretty obvious the way the game was panning out, Liverpool aggressively going man to man on Saka, Trossard, Ode and Rice, whilst encouraging us to pass the ball to Gyok and Timber.

I think a braver approach would have consisted of HT subs of White and Jesus, who would have better exploited the space Gyok and Timber were getting.

Our franchise player has like 4 PL goals and 3 assists after 21 games and is hugging the touchline vs Liverpool. We need to get him closer to goal.

I have seen you on multiple occaisions saying he is playing well outside of final ball. His final ball is not a tactical issue imo. Its mixture of mental thing and his team mates messing up the chances he put on plate for them.

Difference between Pep and Arteta has always been who should control the game for you. Pep believes the midfielders should have most of the ball. Arteta believes the defenders should.

Any good team can shut us up because we simply don’t have enough great ball players. That’s why we have to fight so hard. Most likely we win the league. But this struggle football is not sustainable and the drop off will come

The solution if you wanna be dominant is very simple. Focus on the technical side of the game

Arsenal Quotes

When I first came to Arsenal, I realised the back four were all university graduates in the art of defending. As for Tony Adams, I consider him to be a doctor of defence. He is simply outstanding.
