I don't know, Raya pissed away Brentford's season a couple of years ago with this massive howler in the playoff final:

I used that as an argument not to sign him when he was first linked to us

Fact is that was three years ago and he’s been top class ever since. We were still mid pandemic then ffs.

I mean it's a legendary howler tbf  And in such a big game.

I rate Raya and think he's probably a better fit, especially with Ramsdale's form being shaky. Just think the negativity towards Ramsdale is a bit over the top.

Every top keeper ever has had a howler in a big game at some point.

Ramsdale just isn’t good enough and Arteta knows it. Saw the opportunity to upgrade a weak link and took it.

Love the call.

When you're judging keeper I think highlight reels and howler compilations aren't of much use.

Any good keeper is going to have pulled off some top class saves and thrown a few in the back of the net / get caught out playing out from the back.

Personally I think goalkeeper may be the hardest position to really judge players and rank them.

Generally I think goalkeepers shouldn't be judged on their peaks but their consistency levels.

Maybe that's where Ramsdale struggled a little last season.

I'll be honest, I want him to go all-out for the CL this season. Even if it means rotating in some games in the PL.

The reason why I say this is because this season could the best opportunity we had since 2006.

The traditional European powerhouse teams are weaker than us this season. We are literally (in my opinion) the second best team in Europe only behind Man City.

Has anyone seen Bayern Munich this week? They're weak, weak, WEAK.

Real Madrid - again very weak this season. They also literally have no striker. They struggle against very weak sides. We can turn them over.

Barcelona - we thrashed them already in pre-season. We can do it again. Yes they would give us a good game but the days they had Messi are long gone. They won't be bailed out by Messi like they used to be in 2010 or 2011 etc. We could have eliminated them easily back then - if Messi didn't play. And now he's not here for them - we can take them apart.

Italian clubs - they're nowhere near our level.

PSG - they only have a handful of players to worry about. We are better than them in most areas of the pitch.

The only club I'm worried about is Man City. As long as we avoid Man City, we should be progressing through every single round in the CL.

This season is an amazing opportunity to win the CL.

Arteta’s got the money and backing to get away with this stuff. And while he’s winning matches all his ruthless and obsessive behaviour will be applauded and normalised.

And of course if results go badly in the future, which is unlikely with the current spend, people will turn on him like a rabid dog and say they knew his behaviour was OCD like. Much like they’ve U turned on Ramsdale, even though not long ago he was the best thing since sliced bread.

But while Arteta‘s winning, the usual crew are trawling this thread looking to pray on nay sayers like a pack of hyenas.

It’s the ruthless decisions that have allowed us to progress in this way btw…

Execution was off as Arteta unnecessarily gave people a lot to talk about as he usually does, but I also believe he's made the right decision short to mid term.

On paper u would we see we are one of the best sides and we were able to compete with city in the PL, but look at our record in europa league, olympiacos and sporting....these teams are still way off PSG, munich and even the italian teams

Have to agree. Arteta's Europa record is laughable. Hopefully, the players will be able to do it inspite of his inexperience.

I sincerely hoped that Arteta can maintain his ruthless traits if Kai unable to perform after 6 mths time.

Don't think there's any doubt about that for me. Been signs already when he hooked him early against Fulham when he was having a stinker, didn't start at Everton after the break. He's not a young prospect either so I think he'll get a lot less leeway longterm if he still isn't performing.

You could make a decent case we've got a better chance of winning the CL than the PL tbh.

I'll never write off the PL but beating Man City over a 38 game season is probably the hardest task in football at the moment.

Of course there are other strong sides in the CL but in knock out football you've got more of a punchers chance. If Man City go out in the round of 16 or quarters that would really open stuff up and Arteta would seriously have to have a think about where our priorities should lay.

Real, Bayern, PSG etc are very good sides obviously but I don't think they're sides we should be going up against with fear. We can beat them.

In terms of today, I hope Arteta gets us set up well, we need to put Sp**s away and I expect us to do just that.

Was thinking this when we played PSV. Think we have a good shot especially with Timber and Partey back for the latter stages.

I’ve said this religiously for every cup comp available. It’s all about the draw, to some extent you can get through to a cup final with luck AND skill. Especially in the CL as there’s two legs from the knockout stages.

You also have no Liverpool/Anfield which is a huge deal. If city go out relatively early then I’d back us to go far.

In another addition of "Let's compare Mikel with some old geezer 20 years older than him", this time it's Big Ange!

At Arteta's age, Postecoglou was managing the Australia under 20 team (and the Australian under 17s just before that) what a trailblazing young manager he was back in the day!

I am not even sure why I am doing this one to be honest, as what do Sp**s fans even have to flex now...a few Australian and Japanese league titles...
