I was obv happy with the win but dissapointed in arteta. Man for man we are vastly superior to west ham in all areas. They matched us formation and that just seemed to completely nullify us and made them look alot better than they are.

I hope he doesnt have the wenger or pep mentality that he wont change his setup regardless of who we play. Pep can do it because he has supreme quality so lets hope that hasnt rubbed off onto arteta.

No thanks. Chopping and changing was Unai Emery Etxegoien’s style I hated it. At least we have a game plan. It may not always work but I rather stick with it. Players train to it all week and changing a whole system in the middle of the game ruins things. I’m confident we’d have lost the game with a back 4.

Its not chopping and changing its having a plan b. Its utlising the quality against inferior teams. If west ham had gone 0-2 up which they couldve then you wouldve been happy plodding along hoping for a fluke.

Football is about adaptation, freedom to express yourselves. West ham chopped and changed as you said and were very unlucky.

They started the game 3-4-3 they didn’t change it mid game. We do not have the balance in our squad to play with a back 4 we will get far more exposed on the counter attack.

So we were more balanced by having kola in our back 3? Did you watch the game?

Bellerin, holding, gab, saka with dc,xhaka and neny wouldnt have been as exposed as you claim against west ham.

Arteta knows what he wants but we really don't have the players to execute his plan. Even if Saliba was ready yesterday, the loss of Tierney would derail playing 4 at the back. In midfield, we lack speed and agility and we need to replace Laca. There's a lot to do and we are very dependent on fitness and signings atm.

It’s not something that can be changed minutes before the game. All the training sessions will have been carried out with the planned tactics in place. The plan was/is for the left centre half to become a wingback when the team’s on the ball. Kolasinac is the only backup for Tierney who can do that. It just so happens that he was really poor on the ball. I don’t know if AMN can fill the CB role that hasn’t been tested.

Luiz was on the bench, gab couldve gone to lcb. We didnt buy gab to play in the middle, his strength is in the lcb and bringing and passing the ball out. If you are saying kola is better than gab then its time to head off into the sunset.

If you are right and we spend every second on the training ground with 1 formation designed for 1 set of players then we are in big trouble. If things cannot be changed last second then wtf are we gonna do mid game when auba gets injured.

I do understand your points and to a degree i agree but its very niave against top managers and players to not have a option to change. I hope your wrong in that instance, i hope arteta has the lads running 2 or 3 formations that we can switch to

They have a more mobile midfield. Ours will continue to be easily bypassed when we don't play a low block until it's addressed.

Gabriel can’t make those overlapping runs, you need experience as a wingback to make those runs. If Auba gets injured during a game there’s good options to replace him - Saka, Willian etc. Tierney’s role in the current tactics is more of a specialist role. He’s crucial. If there’s time in mid week to change formation due to significant injuries then Arteta would make changes, but that can’t be done minutes before kick off.
Formation does not equal tactics, it’s only a part of it. Arteta does make tactical changes during games, he tells the team to push up, drop deeper, up the tempo, slow it down, make runs etc.
A lot of detailed information goes in to tactics and match preparation at the top level which fans don’t often appreciate.

2 games in and we look poor I’ll say, the club really need to back Arteta with 2 new midfielders.

I feel we will definitely get 1, doubt we get 2 though unfortunately,

The club is dying with Stan in charge. You appoint Arteta and tell him to get blood out of a stone while Sp**s bring in Bergwijn, Reguilion, Bale, Holjberg for Jose, all starters or very close.

So true. The writing is on the wall... will Kroenke disappoint us again?

This. Arteta will soon be on slab one way or another. Even if he over performs and manages several years of top 4 and champions league, despite our terrible ownership. How long before the fans say it's not good enough and send in the planes.

I'm not sure what the plan is and I have never been into blindfold games. Arteta has already been coaching the team for a while. The scoreline tells a tiny bit of the whole story.

If we want to play possession football then we must use the full width of the pitch to create some space, we need quick runs into this space, make the opposition sink into quicksand, moving or changing rapidly and unpredictably. We need runs in between the lines, either with or without the ball and a bigger role for our fullbacks who must constantly bomb forward. Our off the ball movement is also non-existent.

Our players look like they are piecing together disjointed fragments of information.

While I completely agree about the need of new additions I also believe that Arteta still needs to show in these games he has a solution. He can get away with this approach against bigger sides where we just invite pressure and hope for the best but we can't be playing like this all the time. Unless something changes, there's no way we finish higher than 6th this year.
