Mikel Arteta: The Real Deal

Should Arteta’s position as manager be under threat if we don’t win the PL or CL?

Good that will bring his end days nearer because he will cost us the game and the hatred for him will grow. Which will make fans actually booo him on the pitch

We're on track for 84 points for the second season in a row. Wenger beat those numbers twice in 22 years and Ferguson 9 times in 27 years. You can say the league is easier, but Manchester City is just freakish. That team is exceptionally well run, well managed, and has an unfair advantage on the money front. They can pay the biggest wages, take chances on big money young players, cultivate huge commercial revenue, build the best facilities, own several satellite clubs, and scout the biggest talents.

Those advantages have cultivated in a significant squad advantage over everyone else. Their rotation players include Julian Alvarez, Jack Grealish, Mateo Kovacic, Rico Lewis. Those players are half a tier, minimum, above our equivalent rotation options. Rodri, Walker, Stones, Ruben Dias, De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Foden, and Haaland would all be starting options at Bayern/Barcelona/Real Madrid/PSG. And they hired the best manager in the world.

It'l take time to build a squad capable of competing with them. Two summers ago, we were signing their rejects to go up a level (Zinchenko and Jesus). Last summer was the first time we could compete with them on a head-to-head basis for a player like Declan Rice. Now we need to sign more players in that tier and we also need to get lucky that our signings land or exceed expectations the way Liverpool got lucky in signing players like Salah, Mane, and Firmino who all popped.

Did Arteta make some mistakes? I'm sure. But in a 38 game season, everyone will make mistakes. The margin for error now is close to zero such that he'll look like a bottler when/if we lose the title. But even the great Wenger and Ferguson teams lost games in the 30th or 31st or 32nd round or whatever before winning the title. That's because you could win the league with 75-83 points back then.

City could win back to back trebles for crying out aloud! They have scientifically engineered the best club side in recent memory. There's nobility in fighting as the underdog against them and sometimes we can come out on top, but let's not be trigger happy. This is modern soccer and until the rules fundamentally change, there will be some clubs that'll never win anything, some clubs that win a league title every 5-10 years if everything goes right, and some clubs that'll win the league 6-8 times a decade. We are in the middle category and I hope we can get a few titles out of this cycle but all we can do as fans is hope and appreciate the ups and downs of the ride.

Wow some really OTT reactions here for a first loss in 4 months in the league. Especially ones calling for the sack. And it wasn't a bad performance. Mostly it was not taking chances. Anyways there's no one available out there to come and immediately win with us especially with pep still around. So no way we should sack him now.
With our superior goal difference there is zero difference between City being one or two points clear.

Any other opponent & I would agree we're making a meal of it. But City are an entirely differeng level of opposition.

Ceding top spot to them is irreversible so long as Pep remains at the helm.

As far as unsavory alliances go, this is a cut above Superman-Lex Luthor against Brainiac & several levels below Gohan-Krillin & Vegeta against the Ginyu Force.

I can’t remember last time I got angry of an incident during a game than when he tried to nutmeg their player by the edge of the box. For 20 mins we struggled and fans were really nervous. Just defended another corner and this so called experience player decided to do something even u18 kids wouldn’t do. Like how one of our players didn’t slap him at that point is beyond me

White is the only one who has come close to doing what needs to be done and that in and of itself is a shame. Gabby XL should have already disposed of him or asked for a raise being the one most often called upon to clean up his mess. I've never seen a guy who is supposed to come and teach the young players how to win do so much to try to lose games.

Smoked is a stretch, but the record isn't good.

2nd half in isolation was smokey settings though I can't lie, when I saw Aston Villa playing out the back I was actually laughing at them but credit to Emery he stuck to his plan with inferior players.

So many teams come here and pack the middle and get slapped anyways.

Bayern Munich and Porto did similarly. I think when good teams suss out our game plan; they don't fear us, even at home.

We were warned several times in recent months; that the way we play is unsustainable. It's easy enough against teams like Sheffield, Burnley or unmotivated sides like West Ham. But at the business end, facing more tricky and motivated opponents; anyone who really studies football to a high level, knew we'd eventually be found out.

Artetas, young and still learning on the job, he's been impressive at many things. Just can't help thinking he's the guy before THE guy who wins us big trophies. I feel tactically he's underwhelming and his style of management doesn't allow players to grow as characters.

We joke about Emery but the reality is Tets won an FA Cup against a Frank Lampard-led Chelsea & proceeded to spend a warchest that no manager from Chapman up to Emery himself were afforded.

If Emery had been given time & the same funds Tets has, we'd have a European Cup by now, nevermind a title or two.

Yet when the shoe's on the other foot, we're told to "Trust the process". The process has been ongoing for half a f*cking decade with no end product in sight!!

That's a very hot take Hawk that will upset a lot of people. I doubt we would have won a PL title.

I respect Emery a lot but we wouldn’t have won much with him. He is perfectly suited for a team like Aston Villa

The arrogance to play pretty much the same lineup and lose twice... It didn't work the first time nor the second time. Didn't learn a single thing from the first game.

Reverting to Kai and Zinchenko in midfield in crunch time is just crazy to me when you have a full squad.

I feel the teams always underwhelmed me offensively under Arteta. It's improved at times this season but it's just so often sterile. And several attacking players that just aren't up to scratch and none who are world class.
