Mikel Arteta: The Real Deal

Should Arteta’s position as manager be under threat if we don’t win the PL or CL?

🤦🏾‍♂️I'm not saying we shouldn't sign only 1. Of course 1 would have been a huge help. Just in hindsight that wouldn't have been enough for title anyway it looks like

I mean you literally said it "wouldn't change anything" which was a pretty broad statement. It would still have given you a bigger chance in the various competition and might've been the difference in some of the games that didn't go your way pre-injury crisis.

I don't think people realise how pivotal this summer could be. We need to address the numerous holes in the squad, sell the deadwood for good fees and convince our best players to extend. Also, we need a director of football to oversee this mess. We've thrown two transfer windows in succession, which leads to more work to do in the summer. We are effectively cleaning the mess of the previous windows whilst playing catch-up to Liverpool and toeing in line with PSR regulations. This summer has to be a 10/10.

Good luck Arsenal.

Agree with everything in that post apart from this I’m sorry.

Firstly in any line of work the responsibility for anything always goes up the chain. The board gave him control. The board gave him the funds and didn’t raise objections earlier. The board bowed to his threats instead of calling his bluff. And after the contract was signed the board finally made its power play and said “No” but to the detriment of the club that they allegedly serve.

And to top it off the board want to compound this ****show by letting Arteta pick his DoF.

Absolving them by saying it’s 100% Arteta is stupid. If Arsenal were a public company an activist investor would have come in and fired the board by now.
So you’re saying they should’ve fired him already and that it’s on them that they haven’t? That’s fair!!

I get what you’re saying though, but I also disagree. The board have to hand out mandate down the chain, otherwise nothing would ever happen in any organization.

Someone had the mandate to give him the leeway he’s enjoyed. Whether it’s the board, Vinai, Timmyboy or Edu we don’t exactly know. But ofc someone is to blame for that and share some of the responsibility. But in the end it’s been Arteta/Edu’s mandate so falls on them. From everything that’s been reported, our long term hoarding of defense minded players Arteta has been the driving force behind this and not focusing more on attack. But let’s not absolve Edu either then. I do absolve the board as they’ve backed their guy(s).

You give people time and resources to succeed and usually even redeem failings, but at some point you stop.

Also, to @A_G s point; we’re not in this position because of not buying Watkins, we’re here because of not getting any of the available options. Watkins fell into our lap, but before that it was Sesko or no one by all accounts.

Again “Arteta didn’t just want another body”.

What I meant to actually say is we should've gone hard for more than 1 in either Jan or in the summer. Just my point of view, even with 1 overall we wouldn't have won PL or CL if everything else regarding injuries stayed the same

It wasn’t Watkins or no one in the January window. The players are out there, but they don’t fit Arteta’s specificity.
For a coach and a club that has won nothing, it seems to be so full of ****e. Specificity? **** off.

This club is literally the working definition of ‘the blind being led by the blind’.

This is deflecting. There was nothing wrong with Watkins. And besides this argument worked in the summer, saying stuff like “the players are out there” like it’s season 1 of the X Files and not the January transfer window where things are much harder is just not a serious argument.
Just because things are hard, it doesn't mean you do nothing. You are falling for the trap that only one player can fix the issue when that is simply not true. Arsenal need to be agile in the market. If we don't sign the first player we dream of then we run to Chelsea for one of their many flops. Of course, they're so bad that they are unusable. Tel and Muani were unavailable, but neither has PL experience, so of course Arteta said no.

The manager is not the ultimate decision maker in a football club. That is a warped view fans have where they think the manager is responsible for literally everything.
He’s responsible for footballing decisions.

Yes it's his signing. Why what wrong with it? The guy played massive part last tow years for our improvement this season he been average

Most the squad are his players, I don’t get this idea that he doesn’t get his players. He should have signed a forward long ago. Jesus was never good enough. Most of his signings weren’t good enough. He just ain’t great at sporting talent.

I don’t even thinking selling deadwood is that important. Despite everything we did really well last summer getting decent fee’s for the fringe players. Financially the club are positioned to go after top targets immediately.

How are we 2nd in the league with the squad that is mostly his players then if they aren’t good enough? 3rd consecutive title challenge something must be going right.

Do you even know how many players he signed? He got a few right, but most of them are not good enough. Our top two players were not signed by him.

We’re not challenging for the title this season. If Liverpool win their game in hand they’re 9 points clear with 14 to go. Wake up.

I didn't say he don't get his place I said the club failed to sign forwards he wanted to. It could've put us in better situation

How Arteta will even trust people that for 2 years can't even get his targets. Arteta will stay because he love the club any other manager who didn't have past relationship with Arsenal they'd leave
I hear you but surely a failure to sign players is down to him and Edu. If Edu was at fault, then Arteta shouldn't have pkayed along. There's been plenty of money spent and most managers can't get 100 percent of their first choice targets. The Kroenke's have put up enough money in recent years.

Arteta should have be more open minded but doesn't seem he want us ending up with player that won't be upgrade on what we got still this January wasn't about upgrading was just to have enough options

Arsenal Quotes

It was a unique moment, a football fairytale. Was there anyone left who still believed I could give that kind of performance? Probably only Arsène Wenger.
