Mikel Arteta: Top Drawer

Should Arteta’s position as manager be under threat if we don’t win the PL or CL?

I do wonder what Farzad's silly little criticisms will be if we win the PL or CL this year - will he backtrack his comments about Mik that he is currently making since they would have happened within a season of success?

I guess we'll find out.
It's easy. He will say the team won despite Mikel and havertz. He already said something similar in the havertz thread that the team is doing well despite the 2.

I agree, and it's definitely true of non elite sides.

I think for the very best sides though it's about dominating possession and controlling the ball. I think for that you need defenders who are very comfortable on the ball and can play out from the back to a high standard. Maybe to a degree they don't need to be quite as good traditional CB's as previous eras.

It's no knock on Bould or Keown though. They're of a era where different things were expected of CB's. I rate both of them very highly.

If you lack the players, don't do it. Coaches, particularly in performance football, should prioritize maximizing player strengths. Look at how Burnley is playing this season; imo,the worst Premier League side ever. I can't believe they're not being talked about more by the media.

No, Sheffield are definitely the worst!

But agree with you that Burnley should not be trying to play like City. It worked in the championship but you can't try that in the PL with that personnel. When he started to see how badly it was going, why didn't he change tactics?

Yeah, there’s broadly two paradigms: 1) Build the team around the players or (2) Define a system and buy players who fit within that.

Arteta is obviously of the second persuasion. I think a lot of the people here that dislike his methods mainly have a problem with this paradigm.

Fwiw I think over long timeframes, the second option almost always outperforms. Not just in football either… just as a general strategy it’s a good idea because it gives continuity, decreases key man risk, enables alignment of different parts of the operation etc (think recruitment). It comes with a large upfront cost as you need to buy a whole bunch of new players, but again over a long timeframe it is usually more efficient (you need better quality players to get the same results if you’re going to rely on individualism as opposed to team work).

Yes, but one system can becomes predictable. Arteta hasn't won anything since he started spending. Real Madrid, the most successful Champions League side this decade, aren't wedded to a specific approach; it's all about getting the best players and winning.

I understand that with clubs like Arsenal, Ajax, and Barcelona, it's different as they are broadly renowned for their style and approach. However, when I see clubs like Everton and Burnley trying to play possession football, its annoying. It goes against their identity and doesn't resonate with their respective fanbases.

Still we're competing with them thanks to our great manager! Sad that some of our own "fans" downplay what we have done based on spending without understanding that everyone around us are also spending.

Mikel has made us competitive for the top titles again, if you asked anyone that in 2017 they would cut their hands off. He has his flaws but this "coneboy" stuff is ridiculous looking at the bigger picture.

We are not remotely favorites to win anything again this year. I hope he does win something big this year

They could play like Klopp and they would still suck.

Out of interest, why does his little criticisms bother you? I find this constant need to have 100% consensus for Arteta appreciation very weird.

If you don't like Arteta by now no amount of success will matter at this point.
