Nah leave Wenger out of this. I've typed this before but I can definitely see a scenario where things go bad and fans start abusing Wenger again and things get toxic. Besides Arteta and Edu are front and centre of this project. I don't want any accountability to be thrown at Wenger's direction for those two. I want see what the duo are actually made of before we even think of inviting Wenger back. Finally, the football scene has changed. What role do you want Wenger to be involved in? Recruitment? His last few years at recruiting were shoddy at best and we notoriously missed out on class players because he wouldn't work with super agents. Youth development? Per already has that role and is doing well according to critics. Contract negotiations? How many players under Wenger forced their way out when he was in charge? Long story short, there's no room for Wenger in this current setup.
Good arguments fair enough, I did think he was passed it by the time we let him go.

I dunno man, i think the idiots may now understand his achievements more.
i would love to see Arsène back someday even its just to watch a game or turn up at the training ground , perhaps in an informal ambassador type role.
I dont want him front & centre but I do want him to feel love & that he is appreciated by the club & fans.

I think Wenger could be a great commercial deal and corporate sponsorship guy. Rich sods and corporate aholes love celebrities. Not stereotype but the French maybe the most difficult people to get a discount from in my business dealings they act like you just asked them to film a porno at the louvre if your contracting with them and ask for a penny taken off their bid. But why would the guy want a demotion, I actually think he would be a great head off the sponsorship and corporate part of the business

There are 2 big mistakes I think Wenger committed. One was only signing Cech, that decision did cost us the league. The other one was not leaving after winning FA cup and letting Arsenal to Klopp.

Maybe

You're wrong, no?

Klopp wanted to go to Liverpool if I remember correctly

There is something I don’t quite understand, how or why is it that fans keep repeating the same old tired and incorrect assumptions when discussing Wenger’s tenure?

The all make the assumption that Wenger and Wenger alone made all the decisions especially football related ones during his time here.

For example they say he only recruited one player in Cech ( which is factually correct). But ignored the fact that the club tried to recruit other players during that window. Transfer dealings are not down to the buying club alone. There are many other parties and variables.

Secondly they assume he had free reign of all transfer funds. No that has never been the case. With the business model that Arsenal have had for many years, we can only spend what we earned, the owners refused to invest in the team therefore transfer budgets were restricted to the income the club earned. Addendum to this is that transfer fees are only a portion of total player costs, wages and bonuses are also to be incorporated into assessing the cost of recruitment and existing costs.

Arsenal adherence to Financial Fair Play cost us big time as while we hindered ourselves by following this principle others didn’t and invested in their squad ( Man City and Chelsea).

The club decided who to recruit not Wenger. If they wanted Klopp they should have reached out to him. To blame Wenger for Klopp going to Liverpool is about one of the dumbest anti Wenger arguments I have seen around.

Should he have left earlier? Perhaps so. Was it his decision alone? No.

tbf @yorch44 was only giving his opinion as you are giving your own.

Arsène had more power than any manager ever at a football club. I think when big money was made available to him from the Özil signing onwards. He basically could have got whatever he wanted within reason. The bid for suarez & the signings of Auba & Laca inside 12 months proved that.
Yes sometimes signings dont work. Xhaka, Mustafi, Perez window is seen as arounf £100m spent poorly.

He could have made the decision to leave twice after cup final victorys on a high but chose to carry on.

Was it his achoice alone No? However im sure he would have gone with the clubs blessing.
However I doubt Arsène unike Ferguson would have ever chosen to step aside. I also dont think the club wanted to say Arsène perhaps its a good time to go, Out of respect they wanted him to make the decision .
However Arsène probably always felt he had unfinished work & so would have to be dragged out kicking & screaming 😅

It created a very awkward situation.

Only time I honestly could see him walking away was perhaps if he won the League title/Champs league & lets be honest that wasnt gonna happen.

Top post. It was all part of the narrative that rose up on social media because fans wanted a shiny new manager instead of some old guy. It didn’t matter how good he was. He did everything in the club except make the tea, he sent players out to do what they wanted and he didn’t want to spend Kroenke’s money even though it was offered. All boll*cks but it helped get rid of him. Laughable really.

Where do you think we’d be if Wenger stayed on and we spent the same amount of money since he left ?

🤣 Top 4 minimum thats like asking the pope if he believes in God!

trax has just said the simple fact is that Arsène would point blank refuse to spend Stans hard earned .

Even though signing Auba, Laca Mesut, Alexis, Xhaka, Mustafi, Perez etc cost circa £250m.

For balance that was when £250m was far bigger coin than it is today.

Indeed, that stuff is up to the board and the board alone man. They were happily using Arsène as a corn shield, which makes a lot more sense seeing where we are now.

Would like to know how exactly Ivan convinced the board to sack Arsène in 2018, tbh.

Considering they legitimately had no plan on what to do after him

I mean not to get in my Trax bag, but I am pretty sure planes, trains & social media rants had quite a bit to do with it. In combination with the boardroom politicking of course.

Furthermore we had never seen those results and league finishes under Wenger before. Literally became untenable and KSE we're quite clearly pushed into this rather than genuine ambition or anything like that.

We really are a terrible, terrible fanbase.

Bar the odd good fan, like you and I, for excellent examples.

It really wasn't that hard of a convince, it was a quite obvious decision to make. A simple, we are the only club in the whole world that makes no progress over a 2-3 year period of time much less a 10 year period of time and doesn't sack our manger, would work.

Yeah, not having any plan afterwards was obviously the issue there, but clowns will be clowns and even clowns can state an obvious reasoning like the above.

I was wholeheartedly Wenger out tbh, but man if only I had known how f*cked off I'd have been in the current timeline.

Had I just known 4th was the holy grail.. I'd have been Wenger In because through all our faults I really bought into the values we had whilst he was here, but here we are.

I'm glad I wasn't at the Emirates foaming at the mouth though, I had largely internalised my frustrations out of respect for the man so that's something at least.
