Mikel Merino: Like a Meri-new Signing

It’s kinda amazing how Arteta treated havertz who was terrible when he came here to his fellow Spanish brother. To be subbed at half time so early in your arsenal career is a really bad sign. He must be fuming with him when you consider how he went to war with the club to get him. Merino is paying the price for tets ego

Well this is not turning good signing early to judge still but early signs not encouraging. He struggling with the pace we want to play.

I'll give him more time but with team struggling he'll get it badly

how long do we give it before the Spanish plumbers sent on a loan to a midtable la liga side?

Didn't like the signing as i never saw what he did that was actually special.

I still don't know what he does.

You know how many on this forum including myself have accused Rice of being basic, plodder, midtable, lumberjack etc? That kind of stuff.

Well, we were wrong and that’s actually Merino. From the admittedly very little I’ve seen of him anyways.

Rice can pass. I know its become a meme on here, but Rice can progress the ball and break lines on occasion. What Rice lacks is bravery and the ability to play on the half-turn turn like Partey. He should model his game on Jorginho. Merino can't pass for **** though. He's genuinely horrid.

I thought this guy was going to replace Partey in a Rice/Merino/Ode midfield. Turns out TP5 is twice the player and probably still the best midfielder at the club.

Early days I know, but I am struggling to see what Merino adds.

His main strength is when the keeper kicks it long, he wins the first ball in midfield heads in on. He did this a lot for his club. Also in the air set pieces. You don’t want him on the ball. He was supposed to give us more strength in the air as we fully committed to being set piece merchants. We forgot most football is played on the ground and he’s not so good at that

Nice, that we are always finding the 1% of Spanish midfielders, which are struggling here due to different reasons (Ceballos, Denis Suarez, Merino).

Probably Ceballos still had the most potential on his best days, but sadly he wasn't constant enough on that level.

Not sure where the Rice comparisons came from or the Xhaka ones.

Rice is a plumber, but a good plumber. Doesn't have lead feet off the ball nor defensively.

Merino gets tired easily. Was huffing and puffing again early in the 1st half.

He is good in the air they say? Great, a 3rd Mario brother. Mario and Luigi were plumbers too.

Well, what about the ground where most of the game is played?

Was he hooked or injured?

Im usually spot on with signings so expect him to come good.

Arsenal Quotes

This is a big moment of happiness...we waited a long time for this and the happiness is linked sometimes with the suffering, and the time that you have to wait....this was more important than all the other (trophies) we have twice won the double, but were not under pressure then like we were today.
