Eh, no Kai at CM just doesn’t play like one, he doesn’t have the engine for it, he doesn’t drop deep or make challenges. He’s good at pressing and winning headers when defending corners but that’s it.

Kai has an incredible engine tbf. He also does drop deep and does make challenges.

I think you’re reaching.

Good, but still not ideal. That’s my concern with Merino.

I think he’s “good enough” for 90+ points in the prem btw. And the price is insanely good. He’ll be an improvement on Havertz in midfield for sure.

I’d rather get him and leave the door open for “The One” instead of dropping 100m on Bruno Guimares and slamming the door shut.

The reason I like this signing and one thing that irks me the most about Arteta is the constant ‘versatile’ crap we keep doing with players. Adding in Merino should in theory lead to 3 things.

Havertz stays CF and continues to develop as one, no more CM bullshit.

Rice goes back to 6 and continues to develop as one and is 8 only occasionally.

We have a proper box to box who’s experienced playing this role.

All 3 should have their favoured and best positions and we don’t have to do any wacky crap unless we’re desperate.

Will Arteta do this? Probably not, creep.

Nah he really doesn’t. He can’t conduct when he drops deep, he simply adds an option that’s it. He also isn’t a consistent tackler and he has a forwards engine, midfield it’s different.

I hate Kai at midfield and you’re spot on with the conducting bit but an engine is an engine is all I’m saying.

Merino is better than Kai at midfield though, end of.

It’s also about consistency as well. If you can sit here and look back at Kai’s midfield performance’s and conclude he’s was consistently up and down the pitch, conducting the midfield, creating, defending, attacking, winning duals, making blocks then I can’t help you.

The last person we had doing this was Xhaka.

Yeah let’s just pay the whole fee now without negotiating, that won’t effect us in the future when we try to sign other players.
25 mil is nothing man. losing points in the first 2-3 weeks because we are not ready means no title....again

Think the comparisons are coming from Xhaka’s role in 22/23, where it was a lot more focused on off the ball movements than on the ball.

In general, Xhaka is a deeper player than Merino.
Merino is typical "box to box" midfielder who is more similar to Rice than to Xhaka.
Xhaka is excellent passer, Merino is not passer at all, his passing is bad.
Merino is very good in aerial duels, interception of opposition’s counters, winning second balls and scoring headers.

If he arrives, I guess he would be used as Rice rotation/ substitution.

Maybe because Merino is genuine midfielder, midfield specialist.

Havertz is some attacker/ midfielder hybrid, transfermarkt/ sofascore, etc. describes him as attacking midfielder.
But not genuine midfielder.

Xhaka played as a box to box in 22/23. He stayed well clear of Partey and Zinchenko who took control of the build up.

His rolls was to make movements in the final third and use his passing ability more in the final third. I think this is what Merino would be good at.

If we can’t win those games without Micky, we’re not league winners material anyway.
You gonna defend the club even if we complete last day of the window because we saved 500k. This deal is a tap in and any serious club should complete it in 2 days after player said yes. It shouldn’t take this long

It’s literally not because he has release clause and we’re signing him for less than half of that, so obviously the exact structure of the deal takes time to complete.
