I guess Arsenal has waited so long because Sociedad wanted to sort out Zubimendi first (they wanted to be certain that he will stay).
Now they are more open to negotiate about Merino.

People think buying players is like going to the supermarket. My ex knew a Leeds fullback's girlfriend. The player was offered a transfer to Newcastle years back during a winter window. He ended up not going for it because his bird didn't want to move up there because of her job. Merino will have a load of upheaval when he moves and that might be part of the reason it's taking this long. Maybe Arsenal want to save money in wages. Maybe they are discussing his role in the team. Maybe they've asked him to learn a bit of English first.

Footballers earn like 300-500x more than normal people, I think their career moves take precedence over their girlfriends (not even wive’s) new job. That sounds like a unique situation.

It sounds like Merino is fully sold into the move. He has also lived in England before (Newcastle of all places) and also in Germany. Don’t think this delay is from the player’s side.

It’s about us and our negotiations with sociedad.

Marca, As, Mundo Deportivo and others in Spain spent one month saying that LeNormand was sold to Atlético de Madrid for €25 M before the euro. One week after the euro it was announced and the price was €35 + 5 M. With Kubo it was similar. Marca saying that Real Sociedad would pay 15 M and Real Madrid would have an option to recover for 25 million, in the end it was €6,5 M and no option.

I´m not saying that with Merino will happen the same. Just that the ciffers that most media, even spanish media, give regarthing Real Sociedad are many times off.

I mean, I will wait for the announce to make any judgement.

While this is true, what @ArsenesCoatMaker outlined is actually more relevant than you think.

(None of this is about Merino, but an insight into transfers and player movement)

I was listening to a podcast interview of Hugo Scheckter, who is the founder of Player Care Group, and he's been consulting for clubs and working directly for individual PL clubs over the past 5-10 years. (Was Brentford's Player Care Head)

He talked about how Player Care Managers (or whatever the name an individual club gives that role) can actually be involved in transfers for a player up to 6 months or more before the transfer is even done.

Some clubs put a player in touch with their Player Care person after the deal is done, but some clubs introduce the player to their Player Care Manager months in advance of a deal even happening. Sometimes the deal doesn't even end up happening.

He talked about doing little things for players like arranging insurance and NI to taking them to local parts of a city that has the shops and restaurants from their culture etc. etc., to try and help them (or convince them, in the case of pre-transfer) that they can acclimate to the city.

He specifically talked about an unnamed player who told him directly "I really don't matter in all of this, the most important person is my mum so whatever she says, needs, or asks for is what takes priority so that's what I'll need you to deal with on my behalf"

This is not Hugo's example from the podcast, but you know how Calafiori was at the Arsenal/Palace game in January? And he took video of him walking with fans, not being recognised and sitting with the crowd and all of that?

It wouldn't surprise me if that was some sort of Player Care organised outing where he gets to know the club from a different side, maybe talks to some people off-the-record and just gets a feel for us while in discussion about a possible move 7 months later.

So long story short - @ArsenesCoatMaker isn't wrong. Transfers can have little details we'll never know, because yes they are footballers, but first and foremost everyone involved is a person.

You touched off a point that counters. They’re already earning so much that financially they’re more likely to factor in quality of life issues than the majority of us plebs who need to follow the money.

This window alone you have Sesko, Williams and Zubimendi turn down moves to ‘bigger’ clubs for a variety of personal reasons

Arsenal Quotes

When we won the title on May 3-rd by beating Everton 4-0 as Tony Adams scored that iconic goal, we showed everyone and especially Manchester United that we could beat them. Thirteen days later, when we beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup final in the legendary Wembley Stadium, it was wonderful... I felt immensely proud for the team, for the club: this was the fantastic response I was able to give to those who had put their confidence in me, as well as those who had put me through all those difficult weeks when I first arrived.
