Tielemans was very good last season too we wanted him before but not sure if we still want him. he'll give us elite depth.
That elite depth was free a couple of season ago. It was just bad business from Edu not signing him while he linked with us all the time. If it didn't worked out, we could have sell to a club like Vila for 30m+.

I think the Tielemans stuff is revisionism. He's looked good at Villa recently but his stock wasn't very high before that. It wasn't a mistake but good for Youri
He was one of the better players at Leicester. Arsenal top always talks about "market opportunities". That was a typical market opportunity that you can do with your eyes closed.

You mean the guy who this forum routinely nicknamed Teletubby and panicked over him being dispossessed and had no ability to run back, press, and looked tired from minute one?

You're saying that some on AM are now practicing revisionism?

No way. Doesn't sound like this place

Exactly. The Tielemans who left Leicester wasn't the same FA Cup winning Tielemans. He'd had a really poor season when they got relegated.

He had looked shocking for Leicester defensively at the end of his tenure. Was jogging in transitions.

I did suspect back then that it might be because he's downed tools, though.

What’s the diff? Ngl I think people use both interchangeably you know.
To add to @MutableEarth 's explanation:

In a low block, the backline is inside the box, while the frontline is inside the center circle in their own half. The target man is usually slightly ahead to attack hoof balls. It becomes a park the bus when that frontline comes even deeper and is positioned on the center circle itself and even the target man is behind the kick off line.

In a mid block, the backline is on the edge of the box or slightly ahead, while the frontline is just ahead of the kick off line or right on it.

Low blocks invite pressure from the opposition, defend by creating congestion, and attack with direct long balls to the target man.

Mid blocks don't invite pressure from the opposition, they look to crush them in the middle by overcrowding and winning the ball back to quickly counter.

One important aspect here is that low blocks enable the opposition to build from the back rather freely. Mid blocks don't, they render ball playing CBs less useful because the frontline holds off and stays in the middle. The CBs have to dribble with the ball to join the play instead.

The most effective attacking attributes against low blocks are intricate dribbling and link-up in tight spaces, crosses/headers, and long shots. The most effective attributes against mid-blocks are crafty midfielders who have good close control and passing variety, and attackers who can run in behind.

To illustrate the point above, the reason you couldn't defend prime Barcelona is that they had the answer for all three types of defending - low block, mid block, high press. They had the intricate link-up players who could also run in behind, crafty midfielders in the middle, and ball playing CBs in the back.

I wanted him at the time and he’s proven to be a decent player.

For context we got Fabio Vieira instead that summer.

YT would have been a much better acquisition.

It’s kind of a team and manager’s job to spot players like Tielemans who are clearly very talented and back themselves to get the best out of him.

I was advocating that we sign him on a free back then tbh.

Youri was a super talent as youngster who went for free to Villa. This was a young player who was voted motm in the fa cup and scored the winner

If Arsenal football club can’t identify any upcoming player until every fool can see it. Then what’s the point of having scouts and DoF?

Tielemans barely played in his first full season at Villa. You would assume he would of gotten even less minutes for us given we lined up Rice early and we made a suprise movedfor Havertz. Arteta likes athletes by the looks of it and Tielemans looks like a mouth breather. Can't give guys massive contracts and use a space in the squad when they are in that state.

With Zubi incoming, no need for Tielemans as Rice, Zubi, Merino, MLS (if needed) is enough CM. With Cala for both LB/CB (Kiwi if stays can do emergency LB), only need an emergency LB, some cheap versatile decent LB is enough. I doubt young elite LB talent like Hato will want to come if MLS still plays mainly LB and Cala+Kiwi still here.

As for Rogers, he has highest potential of Villa forwards, has done well on both wings and AM for Villa, considering Villa financial issues may be they will be forced to sell at reasonable price for Arsenal to buy.

I don't mean to make this into an Arteta thing but this is something that @A_G and I especially have worried about for a while, it started for me when I realised that what Arteta wants in a striker pretty much rules out most realistic targets. He requires a set of attributes in a striker that means he either wants somebody perfect Isak or will 'settle' for someone like Havertz with no room inbetween for strikers who would get us more goals than Kai. It's a big part of why we've ended up with two strikers on the books, neither of which can really finish.

It's been a theory up until this point but I feel like the fact we're going for Šeško because he can become what Arteta wants in a striker at the expense of someone who will score more goals right now is a decent example of this happening. I think it's even clearer with the LW where it's been Williams or bust up until this summer.

Meanwhile we're seeing our rivals focus more on just signing talented footballers and worrying about the rest later. We don't really know how Wirtz fits into Liverpool but we know he's super talented, same with Cunha at United and Cherki/Nouri at City.

Mikel's specificity is what got us out of the mud but it's in danger of holding us back now. Sometimes you just have to sign talented footballers and make it work. It looks like we're only signing talented players if they fit into pre-defined roles in the squad. Not saying we need to win every transfer battle but a team that just had the difficulties with chance creation that we had this season should at least be interested in guys like Wirtz and Cherki.
Arteta's rigid mindset etc has been a concern for a while but I thought that was the whole point of a DoF. Sometimes Wenger would be in two minds and Dein would offer clarity. This whole goldilocks mentality has to stop. Arteta can coach and Verra needs to find those players who can be coached to add to their natural game abd whose other skills bring something we lack. Even with Zubi, we are still horribly one paced in midfield and attack.
