While Rogers is a Fergie esque target and wouldn't mind it if it happens. Doesn't everyone think we need players who help in low blocks? I guess those are rarely available but I'd like see tzolis come in for sure he seems to be a final third player.

Leo was fine in transition and against low blocks.

Martinelli does nothing against low blocks so another one in that mold would suck ass.

Doue is not happening. And don't know enough about prospects or players these days to name 3-4 other alternatives with those qualities.

Our build up play needs to be alot quicker and get your runners on the wings an upfront. Bssically play to Gyok's strengths and we might get somewhere. This huff and puff bs needs to end!

Seems like there's a deal to be done for him based on their financial outlook.

Do Villa need to sell Rogers?

Villa will be loath to lose Rogers, but his departure could help eradicate their financial worries.

Having exceeded their loss limit under UEFA’s football earnings rule (in essence, a stricter version of the Premier League’s soon-to-be scrapped limit on overall club losses) in 2023-24, Villa entered into a settlement agreement. The terms of that agreement are varied and punitive; and if Villa breach it, they’ll be banned from European competitions for a year.

Avoiding that outcome won’t be easy. The agreement limited Villa to a maximum of €60million (about £51m) in adjusted losses in 2025-26 and no loss at all in 2026-27, albeit that amount can be upped by whatever headroom Villa had under last season’s €60m.

Yet that potential increase is rendered moot by the fact that, in 2027-28, Villa will be assessed on three seasons’ worth of losses from 2025 to 2027. Their football earnings figure in 2024-25 — a year when, for UEFA purposes, they made a €97million pre-tax loss — will be included in the assessment.

The football earnings rule allows deductions for ‘good’ expenditure, and Villa’s deductions are substantial: roughly €60million in 2024-25, per the club’s accounts. Yet that still left them with a chunky football earnings loss, and this was in a year with Champions League football. The expectation is they ran close to 2025-26’s €60m limit, meaning they enter this season with two years’ worth of heavy losses.

Their three-year loss limit is €60million, potentially rising to €90m if they hit a few markers of good financial health — which English clubs rarely do. It’s highly likely Villa need to turn a profit this season.

Champions League money and increased ticket prices will help (a closed North Stand won’t), but it’s also worth saying that the 2024-25 loss included £52million (around €62m) in player sale profits. That means Villa’s underlying loss before player sales was even greater still, and continued player sales are needed to either get losses down or, as looks required this year, turn them into a profit.

Villa will therefore need to sell this season and, naturally, letting go of their most valuable player might be the easiest route to compliance. Rogers arrived from Middlesbrough two and a half years ago for just £7million, rising to a maximum of £15m. Even as Middlesbrough hold a 20 per cent sell-on clause, the size of fee it would take to wrest Rogers from Villa is so vast it would still translate to massive accounting profit.

It may be so massive it wipes out compliance worries in one fell swoop, and will help Villa on their squad cost ratio (SCR) too; last week, it was announced they’d been fined an unconditional €7.5million for breaching UEFA SCR for a second year running, with up to €15m more to come if they don’t continue to “significantly decrease their squad cost ratio in 2026”. One-third of player profits count to annual SCR calculations.

Rogers might be Villa’s easiest recourse but they’d also much prefer to keep him. Doing so would require profitable trading elsewhere, and likely in volume. If those sales aren’t forthcoming, a tricky game of timing comes into play. Villa have until June 30, 2027, to get this season’s figures shipshape, but as that date approaches, desperation will advance too. Others will be watching.

I was sort of hoping we would sell Onana this window, but there goes that I guess.

At least we'll get the wage compensation from FIFA and Kamara will be back by August.

As for sellable assets, I suspect we'll be looking to sell Bogarde to Brighton et al. before anyone else. He'll be pure profit at least.

What is this wage compensation?

Okie got it.

Under the FIFA Club Protection Programme, clubs are reimbursed for an injured player's salary after the first 28 days of absence, capped at £120,000 per week.

Think it's important to note that we don't actually need the money. We are flush with money. The rules however are all about revenue. And we need to show increased revenue.

I think unfortunately for you lot, that the UEFA punishment for breaching SCR is what will kill this transfer. Afaik we can't register new players for the A-list in UEFA comps. Meaning any sale will cause huge trouble for the CL campaign - where you ultimately gain more revenue.

Secondly, the Boro sell on is obviously key here. I see fans on here saying 'that sounds like a you-problem', but it's a given it's a buying club's problem however you choose to spin it - as Villa don't need to sell Rogers.

Those clued up to our finances, are claiming we will be in a very very different financial situation next season. So I would not be surprised if the club decided to keep everyone they could and replace Sancho/Elliott/Guessand/Bailey/Abraham with whoever they can get in on free or low fee.

Fwiw I think most players in the world would like to join Arsenal at the moment, Rogers included, but I just can't see it happening. It creates more problems than it solves, thus the fees will be very high.

Anyway, I've been reading this forum for a few years. Decided to drop a post today as I'm down a Stella on vacation and trying to unwind. Hope you are okay with opposition fans invading the site.

You can buy players to register in Europe but under the punnishment agreement you signed up to has to be equal or less to players you sell.

So beer mat maths, sell Rogers for 110m = 22m to Bourough - 30m player, 28m player, 30m player. And you can register those 3 players. That's my understanding anyway.

Free transfers and loans I think you can just register them.

Also you kind of need to bring in funds and reduce the wage bill to evade a European ban. Not sure if you need to get down spending down to the 70% of revenue this season or next

I honestly just based it around the pink below that's floating on Villa talk.

'Clubs having committed a significant breach (marked with *) are also subject to a restriction on the registration of new players on their List A for the 2026/27 UEFA club competition season.'

My understanding is you can spend and register players upto the amount you bring in through sales.

It would make sense for you to do loans/free transfers on that basis as their lack of fee means they don't count. You should try to loan Nwaneri on that basis.

Not a bad shout, but I imagine wages might be difficult?

Apparently your wagebill has dropped from 96% of your revenue to 71%, with the target being 70%. So either a net profit or a sale of a big earner or 2 should put you back in line so you're complying with UEFA. In theory.

Maybe you could loan out players who are on big wages that aren't in the first team if you can't sell them

Hard to keep track of it all without being a bloody accountant. Might be we have to look into loans, but I don't think nwaneri is likely without an option to buy. So it's probably a no-go.

I suspect we might look at a player like Ugarte.

We can't really be paying more than 85/90m for a no name like Rogers.

I like him as a player and would like the signing but at this point he is just a very good premier league player with no international/european pedigree.

Anderson's price will be raised but he's one of the first names on the teamsheet for England at the WC.

You guys don’t actually expect 100m plus though surely? Gordon went for 70m, so Rodgers for 80m is about fair.
I would think the Onana injury will aid our negotiating power, seems we are moving on this one now.

If we pay £100m or more we have rocks in our head, same if Villa DoF insists on this price tag given change of circumstances.

I would much rather we go straight for Barcola, but expect a brief stalemate on Rogers, we then ramp up Barcola interest causing Villa to rethink their asking price.

I feel it is inherently wrong Villa have the financial constraints they do, but we really need to take advantage and negotiate a good price for us if we are to sign Rogers.

This is a truly depressing sight.
Not a bad player at all, but I fear that because his game is so highlights friendly he's being overrated on here.

I would be more confident if we had a proven track record of making attackers with promising attributes better but our record seems to be 50/50 in that regard. I feel like Rogers is a more powerful, better in transitions version of Eze. I'm a bit confused to see us want two of these left attacking midfielders in the squad. I don't really get it.

We seem to just go for names that a google search would reveal in 5 seconds. Whether that's impressive names like Alvarez or names like Rogers you never get a real idea of the profile we want in our attack. Almost like it's an afterthought.

I don't understand how can Barcola be alternative to Rogers, they are different type of players.
Barcola is out-and-out winger, very fast, good dribbler, excellent in 1 vs 1 and in transition.
Rogers is more AM, not proper winger.

How can serious club treat them as the same, I don't get it?

Last summer we brought both Eze and Madueke.
This year it should be same logic, both Rogers and Barcola.

Arsenal Quotes

The only moment of possible happiness is the present. The past gives regrets. And future uncertainties. Man quickly realised this and created religion. It forgives him what he has done wrong in the past and tells him not to worry about the future, as you will go to paradise.
