These bans aren’t stiff enough.

Competitive integrity is the most fundamental thing to the concept of sport and anything that threatens that concept should be dealt with in the harshest fashion possible.

Toney should have been banned for life for betting against his own teams.

Couldn’t disagree more. There are far more hurtful things in the game that get a slap on the wrist or just plain ignored really, where as when corporate interests get threatened that’s when we see the ban hammer.

Saka, Salah and many other big players that we follow play Fantasy football and openly remove team mates and opposition players before big games when they know something we don’t.

What’s so different between betting and this medium other than money?

The integrity breached is the same and that’s why you shouldn’t always have the laws created by corporate giants blindly govern your morals.

European attitudes to this stuff are so bizarre to me.

Betting against your own team is the single worst thing you can do as an athlete. It’s an absolute non-negotiable that you’re done forever in any NA pro sport. And that’s absolutely freaking correct.

If the bans were harsher maybe this **** wouldn’t be happening constantly.

Agree about the competitive integrity issue. Betting against your own team, in a game you are playing in, should absolutely be a lifetime ban.

But correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the times Toney bet against his team, it was betting against his parent club while he was out on loan? Maybe one incident of betting against his team when he was a long-time injury absence? That's still bad, because it's (or at least looks like) betting with inside information. But it's not the same as betting on your own team to lose with the opportunity to help make that happen.

You clearly have no idea how crippling betting addictions can be, so it’s not worth having this discussion really.

Lifetime bans for a sickness is never the answer and it’s a relief people such as yourself aren’t in any position of power.

Especially with how relentlessly betting is marketed within football you have no idea what promotions or privileges get thrown at these players who probably have an addiction they are hiding.

Get ready to see a lot more players caught for this btw.

He bet against Newcastle while on loan elsewhere but also bet against Wigan when he was on the team but not in the match day squad. And having a player training with the team betting against them is just ... messed up. And that player can find ways to negatively impact the team.

It's enough for me to think a lifetime ban would be appropriate.

I don't give a **** how crippling addiction is.

If you rob a bank to fund your crack cocaine addiction, you aren't getting away with a light slap on the wrist because life was hard.

Playing pro sports as a career is a privilege and if you can't stick to the single most basic rule about being a pro athlete, tough ****ing luck. Have fun being a plumber or working a desk job somewhere if you can't manage this.

Per the bolded, yup. The teams/leagues should share their part of the blame for this mess. The way they've allowed gambling to become intertwined with their product is a disgrace.

It's all great to say 'oh the poor gambling players' as you run down the slippery slope to 5 years from now having an Arsenal player throw an FA Cup final game because they've bet against us. This is zero tolerance stuff and if you don't do zero tolerance you're going to get burned.

First of all, I'm glad my memory of the facts was roughly correct!

Secondly, I think we're mostly on the same side on players betting on football. And especially in games involving their teams. I'm just on the side of penalty for bets on (or giving the appearance of being on) inside information; lifetime ban for bets with (or giving the appearance of) match fixing.

So for me, the Newcastle bets are clearly in the inside information category, not the match fixing category. And the Wigan bet (without evidence Toney was excluded from the squad for non-injury reasons and was fomenting other players to down tools) just barely scrapes by.

Respect your position, largely agree with it. Just think that (unless other evidence emerges) Toney's bets scrape in just barely on the insider knowledge versus match fixing side of the line.

Lovely by Willock. Imagine him at left 8....

Another central midfielder that can actually run that's not just Rice...

I wanted to keep him. He has been injured recently so maybe he wouldn't have helped us but under Emery, it was clear what he could do. His best was as good as ESR's best individually.

Very off topic but its why when someone says you can't do x or y because "its against the law", that is very a very stupid way for you to govern your own personal sense of morality.

Enjoy your oil bribed win today, and oil bribed trophies that will come in the future.

Doesn't change the fact your greatest ever player in Alan Shearer won **** all with you when you were trying to win things properly 👍
