Per Mertesacker: The BFG

Chelsea's entire gameplan yesterday was long ball over the top and exploit our offside trap/Mertesacker's lack of pace.

When an opposition's entire gameplan is based around exploiting one individual then you know it needs to change. Far too ****ing easy and not the first time it's happened this season (see Kane's goal vs us). One pass and it's game over.

A bit gutted for him, think he's done well recently especially with Kos playing so bad. That error can't be excused though and gabriel deserves a chance

The back four is silent without him, can't see it on TV but go to a game and it's rather astounding.

Mertesacker is a good defender, you have to ask why Wenger puts him in such a position.

Koscielny on his heels aswell for that incident. Lad has been cack for about 2 months now.

Terrible from Per but I have doubts about Gabriel too tbh. He deserves a shot but him and Koscielny looks a fairly physically inept pairing to me. Lads looked weak standing beside Costa yesterday. Built like a pair of full-backs.

Think there's a lot to be said for keeping the Merte-Kos partnership until the end of the season tbh. Stability at CB is important and every game counts. Gabriel is hardly a huge improvement either way.

Should have been replaced by now though.

Difficult to accept but Chelsea were better than that and exploited the gaps within our midfield for fun. Our players were crawling around looking punch drunk and the snail's pace suited that little snake. We looked like the away team.

Aye, though a terrible decision from Per - far better to take a probable goal than a certain sending off that early - Kos should have dropped off way earlier. That's how their partnership has always worked.

Haven't really got the time to go over the last 3 pages tbh.

But Per is still a very good option when used right.

Yeah Koscielny is in no position to put a challenge on Costa if he goes on to finish it. Flamini actually managed to delay Willian long enough for the CBs to deal with it.

Flamini didn't buy them the time they needed to adjust and probably shat his pants dragging the danger back to defence.

Koscielny is in a very good position to deal with it here if he drops further back instead of trying to play offside with Per

Yup William started from the edge of Chelsea's box and waltzed his way into our half, save for a feeble challenge from Ramsey who he skipped past all game long. I didn't expect anything from Flamini. He doesn't win many challenges and took the easy way out by going backwards towards goal. Surprised he didn't fall on his arse.

Good catch! Haven't had the heart to watch the highlights but looking at these pictures it certainly seems like it was Koscielny's poor decision that put Per in a sticky spot. That's how it usually goes, when someone springs the offside trap and exposes Per it's Kos that makes the initial mistake.

I've got some sympathy for Koscielny there, not his fault he's playing next to a ****ing tortoise.

Those pictures make me fume, so ****ing easy.

Noob.

1. If the plan is to play him offside, Koscielny is way to late - that happend quite a few times already.
2. If not he has to stay where he is or maybe even start going towards him.

Koscielny tried to play Cesc off in Chelsea's first attack of the game and he nearly set up a goal from it. If you move up and play them on you've ****ed your defence, and he's done it a few times recently.

Per was dire there and Kos has been doing stupid sh!t for some time now. Look at his 'challenge' on Cesc o_O He's pretty inconsistent. Together, they are a fcking nightmare right now. Teams look like scoring every time they run at the heart of our defence with those two there. It needs sorting asap.

Yeah Koscielny looks to be part of the blame there but at the end of the day it was Per who made the awful attempt at a challenge when he's meant to be the senior, experienced authority in the back line.
