I think our defence actually looked alright last night (Kolasinac aside). It's our midfield that is killing us.

Willock never even touched the ball (don't think I heard his name mentioned once by commentators), Xhaka is a second rate footballer and Geundouzi has to try and do everything on his own. We have no creativity, we created ONE chance in that game.

Emery's team selection is absolutely woeful, just can't get my head around some of the decisions he makes. He gets everything back to front. Start your best 11 and then make the changes you *****.

Defence looked alright because Sheffield don't have any quality in forward areas. Their xG rarely crosses 1.0. And in the 2nd half they basically sat back anyway. Watch when Palace and Wolves turn up at the Emirates, they'll slice right through us again.

We won't beat any of the top sides either. We're well and truly doomed on this path. All those fools qutoing the fact we were 3rd a week ago are going to look very silly in May.

Feck, now that you mention it he was completely anonymous.

So was Aubameyang. It’s a function of our inability to progress the ball from back to front. Same thing happened to Bukayo when he was moved from LW to CAM(!?) after Laca came on.

Willock should’ve been played deeper where he can drive past the first and second press or win a duel that takes 1 or 2 opponents out.

His passing is also more incisive than Xhaka and Douzi. Emery deserves his P45 for using CMs in a roaming CAM role.

The difference being the CAM does have a role in progression by being available in half spaces between the lines. It's clearly not Willock's forte though, he's much better when playing deeper and facing the goal as you say.

One can always distinguish a natural CAM by how they occupy spaces. Ziyech, Özil, De Bruyne, Eriksen, they are always able to receive the ball in dangerous positions. Willock is not a CAM.

Mate what do you mean Howes done f*ck all? Took Bournemouth from the bottom division, who were in administration into the premiership. They were on -17 points in the bottom division. Has them playing exiting football most weeks. Kept them up comfortably every season also since they’ve been in the premiership. What you on? Agree with you on Wilder, but that Howe statement is absolute sh*te bro.

They got bankrolled by a Russian oligarch ffs, not as heartwarming a story as they’d have you believe.

Did f*ck all at Burnley without the money.

I literally said before the game that Willock would not touch the ball. We saw it vs Newcastle away. What would change? It is not a negative on Willock. He just doesn't play in that position.

His strengths are duels, covering long distances, driving with the ball and arriving in the box. How can he arrive if he is already there?

It's why Ramsey looks so much better as a central midfielder than he does as a 10. If you are going to play a double pivot with a 10, then that player needs to be strong, be able to shoot from distance, be able to dribble, be a good first time passer, have good movement and also have the eye for a run beyond the striker.

We have one player in the squad that fits that profile. It's not Özil. It is Smith-Rowe.

The number 10 needs to be good with his back to goal, something not inWillocks locker. I wonder how Lacazette would fair there as he is our best striker with his back to goal clever with the ball and clearly a goal threat inside and outside the box. It would also be an attacking decision

Martinelli Aubameyang Pepe
Lacazette
Chambers/Willock Guendouzi
Tierney Luiz Holding Bellerin

I think that attack near justifies two more naturally defensive minded midfielders.

the whole point is the number 10 doesn't receive it back to goal. Should receive it on the half turn.

Bournemouth bankrolled? Going on like they’re Chelsea or something. Howes done wonders for Bournemouth. Most the players playing in their squad in their 1st season in the premiership had been with the club when they were in the lower divisions. Can’t have you discrediting him. If you’re going to respect Wilder (rightly so) then Howe deserves respect also. He was only at Burnley for a season also.

They’ve had a net spend of £175M since getting into the PL, 7th highest in the league in that period.

Thats higher than Liverpool, Sp**s, Chelsea and Leicester. They make nothing through player sales so the spin about little Bournemouth fighting the good fight is wide of the mark.

He had one and a half years at Burnley, and struggled.

I’m saying that to go from the bottom division into the premiership, while still playing good football deserves respect. I’m sure if Wilder keeps Utd up in the premiership for 2/3 seasons then he’ll spend money as well bro.. crazy money in these TV rights, so the smaller clubs can spend more money.

Net spend is a totally irrelevant as a figure.

Consider team A:
Sells a player for £150m. Buys 3 players at £50m each. Their net spend is £0.
Consider team B:
Has no player to sell and buys 3 players at £50m each. Their net spend is £150m.

Those teams have the same assets but it looks like team B is spending more, when you quote net spend.

The entire Liverpool squad cost £639m. The entire Bournemouth squad cost £215m. That's the only figure that has meaning in relation to quality on the pitch.

A number 10 can receive the ball in a variety of ways. Regardless of how they receive it they need to link midfield and attack which I think we can all safely say is not happening. The ball goes up and rarely sticks.

If we dont trust our other 10 to play on the half turn get a 10 in who can play back to goal, hold it up, lay off and pick up a new position. Firminho does this for Liverpool he plays as a half 9 half 10.

We could get rid of the ten and play a flat 3 midfield and put a front three of Aubameyang Lacazette Pepe out or try Lacazette in the ten and have Aubameyang through the middle with Saka or another out wide.

They played us pretty well imo. Pushed us out on the wings, with Kola and Chambers there, not really a threat with their poor crossing. Woulda made a big difference with Tierney on the left flank imo. Everytime he crosses it's pinpoint and a goal chance. They would not be able to afford letting him be alone there and would have to let the middle of the pitch go a bit more. Also our slowpaced passing to get forward made it easy for them to flood the pitch where the ball was before we could get into a dangerous area.

People forget this gang dont let goals in. And we shouldve had a pen or two probably. Pepe shoulda scored.

Our general game plan looked poor at best though, and thats on the manager imo as is, ofcourse, the selection of player which was poor. 2W 0L in Europa league. Coulda played Kolasinac there instead and gotten Tierney gametime vs this lot and use him on sunday as well. Kola has had time to prove himself and he has been bang average or poor and thats not good enough, you shouldn't have to loose four games for us to try what looks like a better player. Poor squad management.

Yes but you have to get them the ball. You need players in deeper positions who can receive the ball under pressure and play incisive passes to the CAM. That’s where we have struggled badly since Cazorla’s injury.
