Premier League 17/18: Matchday 3

I'm tempted to put money on Brighton achieving a legendary winless season that will dwarf our invincible season in the record books. As it stands only Crystal Palace could ruin this intriguing possibility

He wanted to win the CL, technical ability does that. Don't forget Vieira and co. were rubbish in Europe.
There was enough technical ability in that team, it's Wenger that's rubbish in Europe.

Viera, Pires, Bergkamp, Henry etc were all technically gifted.

He got to a final ffs, Henry kick away from winning it.
Think he should have done better with the invincibles.

Overall his European record is quite poor, unless you count consistency in getting to the last 16.

Look how long it's taking City to adjust and PSG.

Our record is poor, but out of 21 years, Wenger has had an elite team for 4/5 of those years. In those 4/5 years we nearly won it.

I think Arsenal become regulars in the Champions League in 2000.

From 2000 to 2006 we were one of the best teams in it. When we were knocked out by Chelsea at Highbury in 2004 in my opinion and even the Real Madrid president said at the time Arsenal and Real Madrid were the worlds best teams.

Wenger broke up the invincables way to quickly not giving Peris, Viera and Lauren the contacts they waned and putting all his trust in players like Fabregas was career ****

There's some truth in what you both say.

@Trilly

I think we lacked depth in those teams of the early 2000s. If we look at the players who didn't regularly start we have: Keown, Parlour, Wiltord, Kanu, Edu, Cygan, Clichy, and Reyes. Consider that Wiltord and Kanu had basically been frozen out over contractual matters, Keown was done, Parlour was heading that way, Cygan was a liability and Clichy was young. In short, Wenger relied or banked heavily on the fitness of those key starting players. It almost backfired on him with our being knocked out of the FA Cup and the UCL in the space of a week. We were quite lucky to get through that Liverpool game off of the back of Henry's heroic performance.

You're right. we probably did better, overall, between the seasons 2005-2006 until about 2010-2011. Appearance in the final, an appearance in a semi-final, and some quarter-final appearances. We were also able to comfortable best teams who were quite formidable.

Yeah we had a serious lack of depth at one stage we were fielding Vieira and Grimandi , also back there were some serious depth in great teams AC Milan , Juve , Inter , , Depo , Valencia , Barca and Madrid and of course Bayern .

Fabregas has done well to work his way back into Conte's plans.

It wasn't long ago that he looked like he was on his way out.
