I'm not sure people realise how special everything about Dowman is.

A 16 year old kid comes in in a crucial title winning game, the pressure is fully on and our whole team was trying to give the ball to him at every opportunity and just let him work.
That aura of dominance, of superiority from a frigging 16 year old?
Holy **** man, Saka it's time to shift position.

Nah it was a genuinely good performance imo. The tempo was much quicker, we weren't taking a million touches of the ball. Our xG being low because Everton defended so resolutely - they were really good at closing us down.
Everton was soso good defensively, insane work-rate

You see, this xG malarkey falls apart a little when it basically says a PROFESSIONAL footballer, 12 times out of 100, misses the Max Dowman chance at an open net (once he's clear).

My gran-in-law would bury that 99 times out of a hundred, if she somehow managed to find herself in that position in that precise moment.

This model doesn't seem to account for no keeper or defenders near. Other models have it as a 1.0 xG chance.

Well then the question (not necessarily to you) would be, what does it actually take into account? Clearly it still reflects a high % chance, which wouldn't be the case if the keeper was well-placed and there were a couple of defenders ready to block the effort...

I’m 46 years old and Max is 41 days younger than my son. It’s outrageous that he’s our best attacking player already. He’s been better than Saka this season and it’s not really close.

I thought the xG argument didn’t matter, or is that only in the Champions League semis?

Kidding aside, I think the team showed a lot more of what we have been asking them to show. They kept knocking on the door all game, kept it open without looking afraid, and their heads never dropped. Ultimately it paid off.

Everton played really well tbf, they were incredibly organized and disciplined. They were happy to defend with 11 men, so this was never going to be a match where xG was racked up, short of individual errors.

Whether this is “very good” or not, idk. Definitely wasn’t as bad as many were claiming it to be, and I’m 85% sure I saw people even complaining about the Dowman sub. I think people are just very nervy atm.
nailed it. When our manager talks about xG, it is blasphemy. But doesn't work the other way around and used as a stick to beat us when we don't win the xG battle (which at the end we did)

This is a hard to break everton side this season compared to previous seasons and we have done well to pick up 6 points. And most of us still did say we were playing well even before the goals. So it is not like we won = we played well.

We played some great stuff in the first half especially were just not quite able to get past their last defenders. It was't the horseshoe of death thing, we were attacking in different ways and like you say moving quickly to do so. The movement of Calafiori and Havertz really helped a lot imo, and Eze had a really strong game in part because of that as well I think.

I thought we dropped off a bit once Havertz was subbed (the Martinelli and Gyok combo is not good) but Dowman's introduction with Saka going central gave us that dynamism back.
