Both Martinelli and Pedro were useless and scored, go figure.
Nelli was more of a threat than Saka & Neto was fine giving Ben White problems at times & scoring when he switched.🤔
It was a cagey game by 2 pretty strong well matched teams.
In isolation a draw away at Chelsea is a good result.

The disappointment is due to varying factors, 3 red cards, key injuries, defensive lapses & a lack of spark we have dropped points & not quite clicked this season as we had hoped.

I think both us & Chelsea likely get top 4 along with Liverpool & Man City.

Our issue is that our first 11 is being played to death which increases the incidence of injury for everyone. We’re basically praying that everyone stays fit.

No options off the bench to provide something different. This will be the undoing of us and it’s so unnecessary when you look at where we were last season.

The defence hasn't looked as solid as it needs to be this season.

Whisper it quietly but Big Willy has been below par on a number of occasions.
Agree with you. Saliba has had some shaky moments but also some immaculate ones too. I think being a full international has been disruptive too. With White under pressure from Timber and injury, along with injuries to Ode and Saka, the right side has been a bit messy. Gabriel has been a rock for the most part considering the LB position is a revolving door. The defence also carried the burden of scoring earler in the season too and I think we've had 7 formations to our back line so far, so we need the starters fully fit and on their game.

It's an issue that we have top quality starting 11 but the levels drop to midtable level the moment use our depth. But honestly the story of majority of teams not only us you take TAA Van Dijk and Salah out from Liverpool they'll struggle long term. What we need to do is refresh the team offensively the only area we kinda secured is defense

The bit about being even better after conceding is what grinds my gears. Be this good for sustained periods over the whole match and even more so if we score first

It's a shame as their equalizer came from a moment of disorganization from us and we got punished to the maximum. Outside of that, they had one other decent chance with Fofana but nothing else.

Frustrating that it feels like as soon as we slip up once we get punished but never punish other teams slip ups

Playing defensively and within ourselves is a conscious choice, it’s why it’s so maddening.

Also goes to the point you made about the defence being under par - it’s insane to expect them to have to keep a clean sheet every single game in order to get a win but that’s where we are and the kind of pressure that we are putting them under with this kind of football.

Fwiw I’m 60% sure we’ll flip the switch and choose to start playing properly after this intl break, and if not then we will after Christmas.

After this intl break might be sufficient, after Christmas definitely too late.
The question is why we didn't flip earlier?
Just because of Ødegaard?
Or we had so many red cards that this habit to play defensively after red card (logical), we use it also in matches when we didn't have red card?

That is indeed the question, and one that’s pushing me to the brink of turning on Arteta.

It’s nothing to do with personnel though. He played the same brand of football at the start of last season with Ødegaard in the team. The difference with the injuries etc is that we haven’t been able to scrape as many points together but the football itself is/was diabolical (by design) at the start of both seasons.

We all know he is stubborn and doesn’t like deviating from his plans until his hand is forced and this season it looks like it will cost us, at least in the league.

Some better fluidity on display in this game, we did leave it for when we had to chase the game again so that would be frustrating.

But good spells nonetheless against a fluid team playing at home. Once again we are seeing aspects of our game that can come together in time for us to go on a long run.

Lets not kid ourselves people, whether we 9 points behind or 9 points ahead at this stage, we are required to go on a run to win the league. Im talking something like 20 wins at least.

We are still in the dumps right now though... lots to do.

Collapse in last 9 games in season 2022/23 killed him.
Since then he has become too conservative and defensive.
He hasn't recovered since then.

The fact that he had to use Rob Holding at Etihad (the game we lost 4:1) forced him to hoard defenders.
And last season we failed again, this only exacerbated his outlook.

Take all this together with the fact that he is still relatively inexperienced as a manager, this is what we have.

This is how I see it.

KSE gambled with inexperienced coach, in a club with high expectations.

Yeah, that seemed a key moment in Arteta's management career. That 4-1 drubbing by City.

Since then we've become a different team, a team more focused on OOP strength and being hard to beat. I think we need that yes, but we also need that flair of 22/23. Then we'll be more a complete team I'd say.

I hope to see that this season.

We need to flip that switch as soon as the international nonsense is over. In fact, we should have flipped when that tactic (that I can't get my head round being deliberate) stopped working three weeks ago. 🙏

Yeah I just want to make sure people understand that it’s a choice. A lot on here will blame it on injuries and bad luck and it just wasn’t that. They didn’t help with the results ofc but the haraamball was all a premeditated choice that he stuck with when when the walls starting caving in.
