Raheem Sterling: Shaken, Not Sterred

If Mikel invested half the energy he used to make Havertz work on Sterling, my man will be cooking rn.

Kai was allowed to make mistakes. Arteta treated him like wenger would an academy grad. But Sterling is just cast aside cos he doesn't sprint the full length of the pitch to win tackles at LB.

I'd very much like @Riou @Trilly thoughts on this matter.

I don’t agree with your assessment of levels above. The defense with Kos, Vermalin and Sagna is arguably on par with our current defense talent wise.

Have you considered the possibility that the modern attacks are just plainly worse?

There are very few dynamic players in the attacking sense in the league anymore. Those defenders were defending against higher quality attacking players. Modern defenders barely have to worry about forwards making runs. Different game to a large degree.

That being said. We get did get some poor defensive players under wenger, Mustafi is a prime example of that.

I don't think this is the case, you get people on here think they're cool saying modern football is trash etc. they're the football equivalent of the test-deficient emo kid saying every popular band is a sellout.

There have been some top attackers in this league in the last decade or so, and tbh if you gave me the choice between

sagna - kos - per - monreal

or

White/Timber - Saliba - Gabriel - Calafiori

For the PL as a whole (92 - today) I pick the latter every single time, its just far more complete physically and technically.

Yeh they’re very similar in that regard. Say weird disingenuous stuff which doesn’t actually make sense but signals something positive.

I get it, he's trying to keep positive about the player and trying to say that things are all good but as you say it just ends up coming across as disingenuous. The proof is in the pudding. We all know there's a reason he's not playing as much. Whether it's tactical, physical, personal, who knows.

While I would agree about the strength of the modern backline. The older back line had better physical fitness and mobility.

In respect to your comment. You fail to appreciate that modern forward lines are frankly very immobile and lack skill. They use crowd tactic to create openings as opposite to transitioning and skills to make space.

I made no mention of modern attacks as being trash. That is false equivalence.

Modern attacking is intelligent in how they create the space by moving around the little positional pieces but it’s entirely predictable because it’s based on the opponent using an either a zonal defense or compact shape. It fails against defenses that are adaptable and switch between man marking and deep compact defenses who refuse to be baited.

Also modern football differs in that the attackers no longer maintain attacking positions but rather move around the pitch floating into midfield and wide positions regularly and the midfielders and defenders also interchange positions with the aim of confusing the opponents and drawing them out and around the pitch hoping to create that little space for the shot.

I rather we kept Nelson, tbh. He wasn't great either, but at least he was our player and scored some big goals.
Sterling offers nothing.

Mikel… Is this real?

Him and Jesus were a bit of a disgrace when they came on, tbh.

This should be no surprise to people. It was evident from the beginning that this was a complete backup signing. He is done. No shame in that.

Mods are unethical! Özil, come assist me please!
It was Arteta project....not working out. Arteta knows he can't give Sterling minutes freely either as he would be obviously scapegoated....and it also would fall back on him.

As telling should have gone to a team that could give him minutes. On merit, he doesn't deserve it over our own players

Give him a fair shot in the left wing.
Trossard is just Trossard and Martinelli is not good enough.

let him have a go.

Just not impressed. He delays his actions which slows us down. He has no vision. He doesn’t take responsibility for defending with the team.

I’d replace him in January if possible.

He's washed. Simple as that. Dude is probably burnt-out from playing so many games from a young age(i get scared the same will happen to Saka).
The fact that we are almost in Dec and he looks so short of fitness and sharpness is disappointing.
Anyone who thinks he will eventually 'come good' is in for a major disappointment.
