Reiss Nelson: Lionelson

Also we produce so many similar type players in Hale End it seems. These not quite midfielders but also not quite wingers like AMN, Saka, Nelson, ESR and I'm sure there's more. You can really see Arsène's influence.

Marcel Lucassen - the Head of Development - basically said this in his interview last year. That there wasn't enough specialisation or focused allocation of ability. Him and Mertesacker have at least gone some way to address this but they do still move players around, but with a view to their projected position. For example, moving Dan Oyegoke from striker to RB/CB and him using Kyle Walker as a template as well as grooming Miguel Azeez - nominally a #8 - for a role as a #6 instead.

Lucassen also said that Saka would be one of the top 3 left backs in football if he wanted to play there.

You're always giving me stick for saying Saka has an immense ceiling as a fullback. That's from our head of development who's seen more of Saka than any of us.

Such is Saka's aptitude that he really has a top class future anywhere that he plays. Indeed I think he'd be a very unique weapon at full back and he's pretty strong in duels. That said, he has a more than high enough ceiling as a forward or a midfielder. He's a very unique talent IMO.

My point is that many on here didn't think he could make it further up forward and hence he is destined to play as a full-back, but I said back then that Saka can make it anywhere he wants to.

Agreed. It just took me a bit longer to see his ceiling in other positions.

Think LB would be a waste considering we’re not exactly full of attacking talent.

We cannot afford to give Nelson ESR 4-5 games to preform when we chasing top 4 finish unless there is injures rarely managers do that. Unfortunately that the reality with youngsters in top 6 clubs of you not Saka Martinelli the chances for these players will be limited.

This is the thing. We can't afford to play the young players because our established experience players just make the coaching staff feel safer. As they don't take risks and should be dependable. The fact is, they are not. Our most creative influence is a 19 year old. 32 year old Willian has not been consistent. Our best CB is 22. Our experienced centre halves either give penalties away and get sent off or they just fall asleep on the half way line or dive in.

Our most dependable centre mid completes 100 passes a game, 8 of which are forward, has zero recovery pace and also is frequently dribbled past. Ceballos dwells on the ball and like Xhaka gets pressed off it.

At some point you just need to accept that playing AMN instead of a Ceballos isn't actually that big of a drop off offensively, but it allows us to take more risks up the pitch as he can recover them for us. We have to realise that Xhaka isn't going to cross the half way line and if you are tucking your full backs in anyway with the addition of Partey, someone like Willock would provide athleticism and the ability to arrive in the box.

Our youngsters would not be more inconsistent than our experienced ones.

Yeah. probably after a very long time we have a set of academy players who can play in the first team.

Say waht you will about hm, but Wenger would never have bought Willian. He would have taken a risk with Pepe, Martinelli and Reiss.

It's a risk-reward game, and our risks are all on older players right now with minimal rewards.
You think the guy who brought in Sylvestre and Cech and gave Gnabry away for peanuts didn't have it in him to overplay average older players at the expense of more talented youth?

Very good performance tonight, always willing to take on the fullback which you rarely see from him. Might have something to do with the opposition being absolute garbage. That probably gave him greater belief in himself.

Looked lively and involved. Shame he couldn’t get on the score sheet but his decision making certainly has improved. Good performance to build from.

This is slightly unjust. Wenger didn't give Gnabry away. Bayern practically poached him. Arsène wanted him to stay.

And Sylvestre was a stop gap signing that didn't work well. I can't defend him over Cech though. Selling Wojiech for so little was criminal.

Sure it's only Dundalk but how refreshing was Reiss Nelson's performance? Bright, creative, direct and so positive. Much better on the left.

If he plays with that much confidence the whole time he'll be a star in no time. He's got all the tools to be a frightening wide player.

This is the turning point for him. He has to be started more often.
He has to do this in the Premier League. Showing up against Dundalk isn't comparable. That said he was excellent today. And hopefully his confidence will kick on.

It's a start. This is the kind of performance I've been looking to see from him since the start of last season. It's against Dundalk but I'm just glad to see him showing a bit of confidence against somebody. There's still many levels to go IMO and I have complaints even in this performance;

He was much better about getting involved in the game today but there was still stretches where he wasn't involved and he needs to be a more dominant influence on the game IMO. He's much better on the left aswell, although he had some really good moments down the right. I want him to shoot more. I know Arteta probably told him to stay ridiculously wide as both him and Pepe/Willian only cut in close to the box but he's got to make more shooting opportunities.

Lastly, I'm super happy to see him get confidence in his dribbling again as it's such a huge asset for him and he's trusting his body more. That said, he needs to get some confidence back in his passing because he's gone for the simple option too much - he had an opportunity to play in Balogun and chose the easy pass instead. I would have liked to see him be a bit braver there, but like I said - it's a start.

Very happy with his performance, could have been even better, would have liked a goal/assist or two but this will do IMO. This is at the very least, a performance that says "I should be playing a LOT more than I am". That's the least I wanted today and I'm very happy that it happened.

I feel like I liked him better at LB than further up the pitch but time will tell. There's also the notion that fullback is one of the most important positions in today's game and just look at someone like Davies, who imo is pretty similar to Saka. Davies also used to be a winger before he was moved to leftback. Wouldn't mind having a sort of Arsenal's own Davies.
