I just saw this on BBC teletext page 309. Apparently, we have tabled a bid for the player and Feyenoord are willing to discuss a deal! Interesting.
Anybody got any info on this guy? Has he played in the UEFA cup this year? Is he capped by Holland?

Robin van Persie

Left-winger Robin van Persie became one of the few teenagers to play in - and win - a major European club final when he was part of the Feyenoord side which beat BV Borussia Dortmund to lift the 2001/02 UEFA Cup. Just 18, he had made only ten league appearances at the time, having been drafted in from the youth ranks during an injury crisis. But this did not prevent him playing the first hour against Dortmund, having already featured in every round following the last-16 tie against Rangers FC. Van Persie, who had signed a three-and-a-half-year contract in January 2002, subsequently took second place in Voetbal International magazine's young player of the year poll. Capped by the Netherlands at under-19 level, he has shown the potential to become the latest in a line of great Dutch wide men, with his exciting runs and incisive crosses. All this despite intense back pain which required him to spend summer 2002 in plaster, although he would be back for the start of the new season.

There's actually resonable quotes in their which can make this story believable. A bit out of the blue to be honest, which shows how wrong the media can get it sometimes. Perhaps I should start watching more of the dutch league to keep an eye on this guy.

Arsenal have Van Persie bid rejected

Feyenoord have revealed today that they have rejected an Arsenal bid for their young striker Robin van Persie.

The Dutch giants are anticipating a follow-up offer from the Premiership leaders.

Feyenoord spokesman Fred Blankemeijer said: 'We have rejected a first bid and we are waiting for Arsenal to come back to us.

'We are waiting for written confirmation of a second bid from them.'

The 20-year-old has scored five goals this season for the Rotterdam giants.

Feyenoord's official club newspaper, Feyenoord Krant, revealed that Van Persie is keen to get away before the transfer window closes on January 31.

'Arsenal have made a serious opening offer and our president, Jorien van den Herik, has already responded,' Feyenoord's external affairs manager Jan D Swart added..

'This offer can be considered a serious base for further negotiations.'

Van Persie's contract with the Rotterdam-based team ends midway through 2005 and despite several attempts by the club he has failed to agree an extension.

'Robin has informed Feyenoord that he will not extend his contract,' said Van Persie's advisor and spokesman, Erwin Boonacker. 'For Robin it is a dream to continue his career abroad with a top team.

'In December, Robin was visited by an Arsenal representative and we informed Feyenoord about the interest from London.

'At the moment we are not negotiating but when Feyenoord and Arsenal reach an agreement, we will start negotiations with Arsenal.'

Although Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has resolutely insisted that his squad does not need bolstering before the summer, his commitment to youth has prompted a move which - should it come off - would see the Gunners secure the signature of one of Holland's best young players.

Van Persie is thought to be rated by Feyenoord in the £4-5million bracket.

They have emerged as a selling club over the past year during which they have offloaded the likes of Pierre van Hooijdonk, Paul Bosvelt and Brett Emerton.

An Arsenal bid may be too hard to resist for the Rotterdammers, given that van Persie has his 'heart set on a transfer', according to his club.

Feyenoord have struggled to keep up with the pace set by joint Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven and Ajax since their summer upheaval, but the form of van Persie has offered hope for the future.

Currently fourth in the Eredivisie, the club recently announced that Ruud Gullit will replace coach Bert van Marwijk in July.

A left-sided forward, van Persie made his Feyenoord debut in the 2001/02 campaign, during which he made 10 appearances, before starring with eight goals last season.

Former Dutch international Gullit said he would like Van Persie to stay.

'If he is doubtful about his future he knows he can come to me and I will advise him to stay at Feyenoord,' Gullit told the club's official newspaper.

'It's not only for our interest but for his interest because I know how it works at a club like Arsenal and you can imagine that Robin will hardly play there in his first few years.

'I don't imagine that a player like (Arsenal's French international) Robert Pires will be posted on the bench in favour of Robin. If Robin wants to stay at Feyenoord he is welcome but I only want to work with players who want to play for the club.'

Soccernet doesn't lie, so this is true. He wants to move before the end of the transfer window too and will cost around £4-5m. Sounds good to me

Arsenal sent a scout to watch Van Persie in December
Arsenal have made a move for Feyenoord winger Robin van Persie, according to the Dutch club.
External affairs manager Jan D Swart said that Arsenal were keen to sign the 20-year-old during the transfer window.

"They have made a serious opening offer and our president, Jorien van den Herik, has responded - it is a base for further negotiations" said Swart.

Van Persie has made it known that he plans to leave Feyenoord at the end of his contract, which ends in 2005

"Robin has informed Feyenoord that he will not extend his contract," said Van Persie's advisor and spokesman, Erwin Boonacker.

"For Robin it is a dream to continue his career abroad with a top team.

HE actually is a number 10 player, not really a left winger, but an attacking midfielder/ striker. Robben is more a solo player, while van Persie is more a team player with a great free kick.

If Robben plays left wing, you could have VDV a a striker, and Sneijder as a midfielder, with van Persie in between!!!!!

Watch out for euro 2008!!!

This is scary stuff. The Dutch youngsters are really good.

the dutch league (ajax in particular) is known for having some of the best young talent in the world.

Sky Sports suggest that wenger will do a similar to Van Persie as what he did with Henry...transform him into the best striker in the world.

that way, he can replace either bergy or pires!!

Well, Reyes could go on to be the best player in the world - and may well be the most sought after kid who's name is not Wayne Rooney or Fernando Torres. And he could be better than both.

Van Persie hasn't shown his talent quite as much as that - injuries and disputes have held him back. Which makes him a classic Wenger purchase ....

There is alot of ability out there - can we guarantee that Van Persie is a better prospect than Ryan Smith or Aliadiere?

The same goes for Reyes. They are a generation ahead of the Smith's, so a gap can be bridged by such purchases.
