Wanted everyone's thoughts on whether they believe Manchester City's recent surge in wealth and subsequent rise is good for the league?

Do you feel the advantage of them attracting world class players to the league outweighs their effect on parity? If so, did you feel similarly with Chelsea?

For whatever reason I've enjoyed City's rise more than Chelsea's. I think this is largely due to David Silva who is quickly becoming one of my favorite players to watch, and while the rest of their team has some great players only Aguero am I excited to watch. As such I feel that without Silva I would approach City with the resentment I've long harbored for Chelsea.

Thoughts?

Manchester City were never more than a mid-table team and now they have become one of the best, if not the best, team in the league. It's like cheating, they were never any good, but now they have become the best without having to do crap for it apart from splashing the cash.

Chelsea have always been a decent team, following in the tracks of the topteams, they only needed a relatively little push to compete with the topteams. Although, they have spent more than what seems a 'little push', you see what I mean.

I'm finding myself liking City a lot more than Chelsea. Perhaps it's because their team doesn't consist of solidified douchenoozles like Terry and Cole.

For someone like me who supports a team far away from the battles for european competition spots, it has certainly made the league much more exciting. The top is basically a toss-up at the moment, and it's been refreshing to see. The old days of Arsenal vs. Man Utd might've been great for you guys, but for us onlookers it was quite.. repetitive :p

But yeah, I think City are great for the league. They bring in superstars, which makes the league more interesting to watch. And the irony is, when a very good players becomes not good enough for City, the "lesser" teams (not meant as offensive) like you and Liverpool can snap them up and greatly improve on your team, which in turn evens out competition even more.

I think managers now matter more than ever. Spending power and player quality has greatly evened out amongst the top, so it's now up to the managers to get the very best out of their players and get their tactics right - something Ferguson has done for years, which you have to admire.

Used have some sympathy for Citeh, now I've none left.

Football was never a level playing field, but in this way any club can suddenly become 1 of the dominant teams in the league. Think it will get worse, wonder how long it will take until the rich will start fighting over the remaining London clubs. QPR or whoever could be way above us and the remainder of London.

Don't think it's even good for the fans, because clubs like Citeh gobble up so many great players, you can't watch half of them. Wish all of them a great time on the bench.

City's emergence as a force to be reckoned with reminds me of good old days when I played Championship Manager and cheated my way trough the game by editing finances.

I think that they will dominate the league for years like Chelsea did after the invincibles :(

I don't believe that a team like Man City, which does not have a storied history, rising up the tables is an intrinsically bad thing.

The issue here is how they have done it. By offering players stupidly high wages and loading up on incredible amounts of other team's homegrown talent, they aren't the most likable team. But as far as individual players go, while I won't ever support any team with Nasri or Tevez on it but really, and aside from De Jong and Kompany who are simply thugs, they aren't really that bad as a whole. Stoke, Man United and Chelsea are way worse.

Chelsea certainly have a team full of pricks, and it was assembled in a similar manner. And Mourinho is a classless piece of ****. Their players individually are a lot less supportable than City's, so I dislike them more.

But as football clubs, I don't believe what they are doing is good for football. If a team rose through the table steadily with smart player transactions, a good manager, and a slowly rising profile, I would have loads of respect for them. But the way City and Chelsea did it just seems like cheating, so **** 'em.

Please remind me how many players we've bought from City and how many they've bought from us in the last few years?

They are a cancer to the league. Bullying teams to take their players from them, signing anyone and everyone hoping they find a winning formula (which it seems they have). I detest City to the very core. If a 30m player doesn't deliver, they'll just replace him with a 40m player. They are a club built on a bottomless pit of money and I can and will never acknowledge anything they manage to achieve.

Adam Johnson just recently signed an extension rumoured to be around 90K. How the **** does a player who has done nothing both at club level and internationally suddenly earn 90K a week? Our top players aren't even on that type of money. Our players will look at those figures and some will beome disillusioned and demand for some parity. The sooner the governing bodies prevent filthy rich billionaires from infiltrating the game, the better it will be.

Imagine in 5 years time, the likes of Wigan, Stoke and Watford are all up there challenging for the title. Anything is possible if billionaires use football as their play thing.

I know you haven't bought any, but the players warming the bench are bound to want a move at some point, just like Real Madrid benchwarmers (Sneider, Van Der Vaart, Gago and even Benzema at some point) want.

Wouldn't you agree that players like De Jong, Johnson and hell, maybe even Milner would add something, be it depth or improvement, to you squad?

And that's just the current crop. They're bound to buy new stars every transfer window, so there'll be even more castoffs later on.

Not saying your squad is **** or anything, because it's not, I'm just saying that, while proving a threat to your title dreams, City could ultimately give you access to very good players who want to stay in England, get CL football and not sit on the bench.

Although I think you have a good logical basis, I can't agree with the points being made. Maybe Liverpool might buy City castoffs, but Arsène is much more likely to buy a talent from the French league, develp him for 3+ years and then sell him TO City for top dollar.

Adebayor, Clichy, Toure, Nasri...

Also, the day Wenger signs James "average as hell" Milner is the day he should quit football. He would add nothing to this Arsenal squad. Other players in their squad may be interesting - maybe if they sold us back Adebayor and Nasri on the cheap so we can sell them for top dollar to Real or PSG

There are three perspectives one could apply to the Manchester City situation. A City fan's perspective, a rival fan's perspective and a neutral observer's.

From a City fan's perspective it's the ultimate wet dream. World class players playing week in week out, exciting, free-flowing football; the works. They'll be damn happy that the sheikhs have picked them out of obscurity and literally bought their way to the top tier of English (and possibly European) football.

A neutral will look upon the situation and likely have a positive outlook. There are more, very skilled players in the league. Superstars like Aguero, Silva etc doing the biz every week makes for much more exciting football. As a neutral observer you could choose to watch us (Arsenal), Citeh, Manure, Chelski, The **** and arguably the Scousers almost every single weekend and expect a thrilling, entertaining spectacle. Considering that there are only 10 fixtures on weekends. One could reasonably expect good, exciting, competitive football 60% of the time.

AND THAT'S BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER DERBIES OR RELEGATION BATTLES!

It makes for great TV, great entertainment, increases the reputation and profile of the league as a whole AND greater competition for the title as opposed to the boring **** happening in La Liga (that may or may not change this season) for example.

As an Arsenal (and subsequently a rival club's)fan though, it's f***ing upsetting that financial prudence, good management, good youth facilities etc, smart investment haven't been resulted in our ability to compete effectively with the money bags and incumbents. I don't hate Citeh as much as some of you do because I can understand that a lot of fans of lower-placed league teams like Dokaka probably felt the same way about us and our meteoric rise under Wenger.

I don't like the fact that playing by the rules and playing well within said rules and not being bought out or having money pumped into us by Billionaire owners leaves us at a competitive disadvantage but life is almost never fair and football certainly isn't.

TL;DR

Multiple ways to look at it. Great for City fans and neutrals, Not so great for rival clubs. I imagine Manure fans and Scousers will be positively seething.

Economically-wise, this is not good for EPL inflation.
When Abramovich started buying players with over-the-top prices and wages, transfers and wage cost has risen to a new standard

City got unlimited money for transfer and wage ..... not good IMO

That's another downside to the whole thing. The money involved makes it even harder for lower-tier clubs to move up the table.

City are *****.

There's nothing good about City cheating their way to success. Mind you, it would be funny if they ended the season without the PL or CL.

Everyone doing that Poznan celebration should be shot aswell.

Well it was Chelsea first. They bought utter **** like Shaun Wright-Phillips for £21m, so I still have a keen dislike for them - it's all about a wage/transfer cap if we genuinely want to solve this problem.

I can make a bold prediction that City will cease to exist within the next 10 years.

Roman gave Chelsea a ton of money to spend, but at the very least he isn't a complete idiot and there are limits to what he is willing to spend. City on the other hand gave out >100k salary like water and have become free targets for muggers. The amount of business acumen shown by the arabs is laughable, look at how they had the chance to sell Tevez for €40m at the start of the season and now he's AWOL in Argentina due to the utter lack of respect they have shown him. And I am willing to bet that no one will want to buy him in Jan after the entire fiasco. The arabs are rich but even they have their own agenda and there will be a limit to how much money they are willing to pour into the club.

Arsenal Quotes

What does Arsenal mean? It means class. The structure of the Club, everything has a classy feel about it. It isn't always about success, there is more than that and this is what makes it a cut above the rest.
