Brings me so much joy you’ve wasted another golden generation on him.

Have to wonder what your future is once Kane is done 🤔
We'll still have Saka, Bellingham, Rice, Colwill and Foden for a start. Kane's game will also age perfectly. He's never been quick and he seems to get better in terms of his movement, passing range and touch and finishing every season. He's got another 2-3 tournaments as a high quality player easily left in him. Kane is the 2nd oldest player in this golden generation so as long as Southgate is gone by the end of next summer, there will be plenty of time for a competent manager to win things with this group. Most of them aren't even in their primes yet and someone will step up at Striker and LB. The future is still very bright for England.

Not with Waistcoat W*nker in charge. Mbappe will pull a Captain Phillips on Deschamps and win it. I'm looking at 2026 with a real manager in charge.

Man is an absolute f*cking joke. This kind of delusion only makes sense if you think the Spuds will move on from big Ange next summer and you want to show you'll fit in. What a tool. So he can banish Ben White for reasons nobody can present but this big clown can continue to make mistakes forever and it's the media's fault? What a joke.

My guy keeps putting him in the firing line by starting him when he’s barely third choice for his club.

Has other in form options he completely ignores and just expects everyone to go along with it because he beat up on dross teams in 2018 and 2021.
Genuinely amazing Maguire still starts when you have CBs like Stones, Colwill, Guehi, Dunk, Tomori. Easily 5 players ahead of him. Not even counting White as CB here who is also better than him.

Think Souness and Cole are right when they said this is the best England squad ever.

Genuinely believe a failure to win a trophy will be a failure.

The problem will be the manager. There’s barely a system and what there is it’s incredibly negative and relies on brilliance of individuals like Saka and Kane, last night reliant solely on Bellingham. You can’t just expect players to play in the exact position and role as they do for their clubs and it to click every time.

Then there’s the use of players who add nothing to the XI like Maguire. If the criticism is affecting his performances and well-being, you’re just as much to blame, Gareth, for continuing to put him in the team. The way he spoke of Foden’s ambitions to play centrally was also very strange.

Agreed. On the last point, there's something deeply wrong with him. It's not even about the players, it's about Southgate's ego. Foden's ability is clear for all to see and he should be happy about a player wanting to assert himself and contribute in more than one position. Contrast that with a total unwillingness to acknowledge that Maguire has been awful for years and it becomes obvious that it isn't about performance so much as him feeling that a couple of glorious failures when England have had easy draws in tournaments means that he is now above his decision making being questioned.

I'm glad the tide is beginning to turn among the pundits and people are starting to realize that this squad is far too good to be held back by this out of his depth, out of touch, championship level manager. It's just a shame that it appears he will be allowed to manage at the Euros which we should be in a position to win but won't because he'll hold us back.

He should be happy about Foden’s mentality but instead wanted to put him back in his place. Southgate’s insistence that players only play in the position and role they play at their club is also a weakness. Fabregas and Bale are examples of how players can shine in one position for the country and one for their club. Pogba and McTominey are examples of how players can shine in different roles for their country yet appear lacklustre for their club in others.

We have some of the best attacking you attacking players in the world in Foden, Saka and Bellingham, then add Kane, Madison, Grealish, Sterling and Rashford and you can get a quality rotation in what should be an attacking team. Instead at time yesterday we had 6 players between the ball and Scotland’s midfield.

It’s not just poor quality but it’s also really ****ing boring

Southgate's logic on Maguire is just absurd. *He himself* has created this mess by continually picking a player who barely plays despite having a wealth of quality CB options available to him. It's obvious to anyone with eyes that Southgate is a handbrake on this team; the fact that he still sticks with the likes of Henderson and Maguire is laughable at this stage.

Don’t really understand the stick Maguire gets for England.

He’s been a top performer at multiple international tournaments for England now. Like it or not international managers trust certain players, and for good reason. International football is very different to club football.

I don’t usually feel sympathy for United players but he’s becoming a scapegoat now. He should have left for West Ham for his own good though.

It’s hilarious yesterday at half time it was going so well without Maguire he thought I can’t have this be used against him. So I’m gonna put him in to be part of this win only for him to score own goal

The Maguire stuff just speaks of Southgates conservative nature.

It's hard to get into an England side under Southgate but once you get in regularly it's even harder to get dropped from it, particularly in the backline.

Part of the problem is Maguire has generally been okay for England over the years and Southgate trusts / likes him, so better up and coming CB's won't get ahead of him in the pecking order till after the EURO's when Southgate goes.

What’s the issue with this if the player consistently performs for your team, and there isn’t really any viable alternative (depending on what you think of guys like Tomori ect)?

Argentina just won the World Cup with a 35 year old Otamendi at CB, a guy who doesn’t exactly light it up at club level, over Martinez who by most people’s account has been good for United…
