I think he was a very good manager, but one thing that I've always said is that he inherited probably the best defence in the League, he NEVER replaced any of them well, and they defended worse and worse with each passing season.

For someone hailed as "a great of the game " managing the 2nd richest Club in the League, then 3rd richest club when Chavs and the gangster got going for TWENTY years he didn't achieve much, 3 PL's and whilst 7 FA Cups is a great return he did have the luck to face 2 relegated teams in the final, soon to be relegated Southampton, 13th placed Newcastle (4pts above relegation), even his win vs Chavs was when they were 6th (23pts below them in the league). And of course, absolutely **** all won in Europe despite 19 consecutive years in the CL.

The reason he's wrongly lorded as a great of the game is the **** had always been one of the dullest, deadest football clubs, the football under Graham was utter dogshit 1-0's. So to them, they had never seen the light and with so many of these ****s working in the media they can push the greatest narratives around. Well, greats of the game win more than 3 league Titles with one of the the richest clubs in the Legaue. The great of the game (Fergie) indeed schooled him virtually every single year (to which I will remain forever grateful).

na i agree. i think souness is right. like you said his record in europe is shocking for a so called legend of the game. his record domestically is also not as great as it seems when you think about. couple doubles fair enough, but that was before the league was really a challenge.

I think he was a great manager, who won a bunch of stuff, and did it playing the best brand of football in the league for most of his first 10 or so years. He improved young players. And saw Arse through a new stadium build and was fiscally pretty prudent too.

He also helped modernise the English game in terms of coaching, methods, science, diets, recruitment, training etc.

Eventually the money in the PL helped competitors catch up with recruitment/coaching/science and in some cases overtake. He lost many of the advantages his innovations had brought. But was still a great coach imo.
