So unfortunately due to a threat of lightning storms in the area we’ve had to delay the last game of Round 2 until now…
It’s @A_G up against @Clrnc with the possibility of @Clrnc being sent packing tonight if his team loses following a defeat to the Ducks last time out.
For this must win game once the rain finally stops both teams exit the tunnel and with a tense handshake we finally get underway.
The early running is done by AG’s boys as they sense an opportunity to go top of a group with a win. With his fearsome front three of Mbappe, Baggio and Neymar being given free reign to roam as they want it seems Clrnc’s midfield pair of Alonso and Matthaus are looking all at see trying to contain them.
Twenty minutes in and a good tackle from Davids allows Amrabat to switch it quickly to Mbappe who’s pulled far out on the left. He puts it through the legs of Zambrotta and Matthaus is too slow to get out.
He plays a beautiful square ball across the box for Neymar to run onto and…
GREAT SAVE FRIEDEL! The American claws it out of the top corner and over the bar.
It’s one way traffic this half as bizarrely Clrnc doesn’t seem to be pushing particularly aggressively for a win here despite his precarious situation in the groups.
As half time approaches it’s Baggio this time for AG skipping past a lunge from Alonso and plays a perfectly timed pass to an onside Neymar with just the keeper to beat…

An outstretched boot from Friedel stops Neymar and a crunching tackle from Godin stops Mbappe as he’s about to tap it in. Mbappe is adamant that’s a penalty but the ref says play on and the ball is recycled to Matthaus in midfield.
Up the field it goes to Hazard who beats Molina, plays a one two with Rivaldo and it’s 3 on 2 for Clrnc on the break.
Head up the Belgian plays it into the box for Robben who Pique desperately tries to show onto his right… but no Robben cuts back and…

AG and his players surround the referee adamant they should have a penalty but the VAR check is complete and against the run of play it’s 1-0 Clrnc on the stroke of half time!
At half time there is another interruption, this time in the shape of a plague of locusts which descend upon the terrified fans.
Despite this biblical intervention being claimed by both managers to show God is on their side the second half eventually resumes and it’s more of the same as AG pushes for an equaliser.
In a terrible bit of luck for Clrnc his goalscorer Arjen Robben disturbs a pocket of locusts still on the field. They swarm everywhere blinding the Dutchman who runs into his dugout and knocks himself out!
In comes Tomas Rosicky for the last 40 minutes.
Baggio meanwhile is playing with a furious energy and he shrugs off Alonso again but is clattered into by Lothar Matthaus apart from 25 yards from goal.
Neymar has pure hunger in his eyes and he’s taking this one. He steps up curls it round the wall and…
OFF THE POST THIS TIME! His nemesis Friedel didn’t even move for that one but watched with relief as it cannons off the pitch much to AG’s frustration.
AG has seen enough and he’s brought on Vitinha for Amrabat and hooked his superstar Mbappe for Luis Suarez.
Almost immediately the substitute Vitinha plays a great switch out to Baggio on the right, he feints past Benatia and whips a cross into the box. Before it can reach Godin, his countryman Luis Suarez nips in front and…

The American has been unbeatable today and locusts or not he’s kept his team in the competition.
With time running down and desperation kicking in, Michael Laudrup on for Eden Hazard, is set off on a counter by Rosicky. He shows it to Vitinha and pulls it away sending the Portuguese midfielder sprawling.
Up to the edge of the box hurdling a challenge from Pique and just as Sol Campbell comes across he THUNDERS IT OFF THE BAR!
Nearly a legendary goal there!
AG is shouting for his team to get forward though and with the ball on the right flank an exhausted Neymar’s cross doesn’t clear Nagatomo.

Indeed even though there are 4 extra minutes to play it seems as if the locusts are returning. Not taking any chances the referee blows for time and both teams run down the tunnel.

Lee comes rushing out of his box to clear it and screams at his defence!! The first real attack GDeep has mustered in some time and it nearly pays off.
Steps FC don’t seem discouraged and continue to play their game. Carlos Valderrama has just come on and is into the action straight away, nicking the ball off Hamsik and playing it forward. His initial chipped pass is cleared but is sent back when Drogba swings a leg at it…
He puts in the net but the flag goes up immediately!! It was a close decision and the fans are fusions at the linesman!! Both managers going through it on the touchline:

Early drama before a ball’s even kicked as the 4th official has to step in as the two managers have already gone at it. A warning from the ref before the opening whistle sounds.
The dislike in the dugouts seems to find its way onto the pitch as the tackles go flying in to start. Making the ref’s life even more difficult is the fact that several incidents have take place off the ball, with John Terry taking the opportunity to get a cheap shot in at Jan Koller. He escapes a booking as the UTC fans scream in anger.
In between all the fouls jones’ side finally start to try and play some football. Some nice play from Kroos frees Ronaldinho down the left and he plays into the box first time. Looks a simple claim for Akinfeev but he drops the ball…
Oh dear, near catastrophe for UTC!! The ball slips out of Akinfeev’s hands but he manages to grasp it before it goes over the line!! Jones is furious, he thinks it went over but since albakos didn’t pay for goal line tech it’s still 0-0!!
The attacks keep coming and again Kroos is at the heart of it. He thinks better of having a shot himself and clips a call over the top for Cavani who smashes it on the volley…
Just goes over!! He caught it cleanly but the shot was always rising.
Jones FC start growing in confidence as they begin to dominate the match, but they start to get cocky and lose the ball cheaply in midfield. Forsberg skips past a defender and tries to break through the defence on the right side before being taken out…the ref is walking over slowly as the players crowd around him to state their case…

Jones FC look to wind down the clock with as much time wasting as possible. Throw ins and free kicks are constantly delayed much to the annoyance of UTC. He complains to the 4th official. More tension on the touchline as Jones steps in before being ushered away by an A-M delegate:

Gooooooal!!! UTC have their equaliser after Jan Koller rises above the Chelsea gimps in defence to make it 1-1!!! UTC celebrates wildly with his staff as the fans sing “Jan Goaler una una”. All square with 15 minutes left!!
Some panic in the jones camp as they’ve subbed off attackers to defend what they have but now find themselves under pressure. They try to break up the game once again as Carvalho goes steaming into Etecheverry on the touchline!! A huge melee ensues as the crowd and UTC players demand a second yellow, with both managers also getting involved.
With all the attention on the players jones walks right over to UpTheChampionz who doesn’t see him coming…

Oh my word, jones has poked UpTheChampionz in the eye!!! A chilling scream of “my eye Clifton!!!” can be heard around the stadium as he hits the deck. Jones walks away laughing as the UTC players have to be restrained from confronting him.
Once the situation calms down the ref sends jones to the stands with a red card!! The 10 man side are now down a manager with less than 10 minutes to go, with players and coaches scrambling to figure out how to see the game out. Carvalho gets subbed out immediately as he’s on the edge of a second yellow that would kill the game for jones’ side.
With time winding down, UTC continue to press for a winner as they crowd the jones box. The defence holds strong until a cross gets cleared right into the path of Cobi Jones…
