The Second AM World Cup Draft (Sign-Up and Discussion Thread)

The picks:
World Cup Yes GIF by FIFA

Have four years passed already? Apparently so which on one hand means the World Cup is only a few months away but even more importantly @A_G and I can run another draft to celebrate.

Now certain members (no names) had some difficulty following the rules in the last draft so no excuses this time round.

The rules are:

1) You can select any player who has started a World Cup game from USA 1994 to Qatar 2022. When selecting your player you have to state which World Cup you’re selecting them.

We’re NOT judging players on overall World Cup careers, just the World Cup that you’ve selected them from.

For example, if you wanted to select Emile Heskey you’d have to specify which one of his two World Cups you’re picking him from. Draft posts would then ideally look like this:

“I select Emile Heskey – South Korea & Japan 2002

Insert reasons for selection here.

1668441091570-png.10571

@next user it’s your turn”

2) You can only select ONE player per nation.

3) You must have at least one player from each of the five FIFA regions in your starting XI:

• CONMEBOL (South America)
• UEFA (Europe)
• CONCACAF (North America & the Caribbean)
• CAF (Africa)
• AFC (Asia)

There is technically a 6th region Oceania but they’ve only sent one team to a World Cup. So if you want to select anyone from 2010 New Zealand they’ll count as an AFC team for the purposes of this game.

Please try and remember that it's a World Cup game so ideally you'd pick players based primarily on that basis. There are bonus points available based on performance...

If you don’t follow these rules you will be of course randomised into oblivion.

One footnote: if you select a player from any one of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro or Serbia you are not allowed to draft a player from the other two iterations. Yes, they’re technically different but each country inherited the previous one’s FIFA place.

Feel like Diamond for that tournament may be a bit high. 3 assists, 1 yellow. Got to the Quarters, but eh?

Had 3 MOTMs plus was the best midfielder in the toughest league in the world so base rating was very high. Was only just one btw.

Yuto Nagatomo a 🐴 too.

Took a risk with him since he's one of my favorite fullbacks ever. Asian teams concedes alot of goals in world cup so with the methodology not surprised he is **** in ratings lol.

I wanted Mane or Kolo over Benatia but didnt account for the fact people picked more Africans than needed. Left it too late. Should have went with Aguerd if I knew how it was counted

There isn’t really a “right” version of Rooney. Managed one goal his entire WC career in a group stage exit in 2014.

Why did @Sapient Hawk get 1998 for Sagnol? 2006 was his best tournament, he was one of the best defenders at that WC.

Yeah so Sagnol didn’t play in 1998 so that’s the 2006 edition.

Ooo I think silver is harsh, started every game to the final and was one of France’s best performers. He was a top RB.

It’s obviously harder to stand out as a fullback so perhaps the ratings overlook some very good performances in that position.

Out of curiosity, is Stojkovic ratings good? @Rex Caudillo

Wanted to pick him and apparently he had a superb tournament individually in 98

He got a clean sheet bonus but considering he didn’t make the expanded 23 man team of the tournament are we saying he was definitively better than Zambrotta and Lahm at RB who did get in?

Because if not you kind of have to draw a line somewhere and maybe the third best RB of 2006 doesn’t get a huge bonus.

I’ll have a look and see after I’ve done all the other player ratings for you.

Ngl bro Benatia over Aguerd is kind of on you lol.

Did say repeatedly that it was a WC draft so pick good players there. Other people picked Saiss and Amrabat early as well.

Idk it’s flip of a coin really, if France had won that final Sagnol probably gets in TOTT ahead of Zambrotta.

Anyway probably not your top priority right now seeing as you’re moving house

I never knew he was so crap. Took a look just now and was shocked he never scored. I kinda remember he had a great world cup in 2006 didn't had time to search before.

Benatia I gambled on his high base ratings since he had a brilliant season at Juventus vs Aguerd at bloody West Ham. When Salah was bronze I knew the gamble failed

Still think Zambrotta and Xabi should be diamonds though

Alonso had a missed penalty otherwise would have been diamond iirc.

Arsenal Quotes

An Arsenal fan, when you finish fourth, will say, “Hey, we’ve been in the top four for twenty years. We want to win the league!”. They don’t care that Manchester City or Chelsea have spent 300 or 400 million euros. They just want to beat them.
But if you finish fifteenth two years running, they will be happy if you finish fourth after that.
