They are called Referees and they are TERRIBLE

Do you think refs consciously treat Arsenal differently than other teams?

Why do you give this attention. The refs are out of house and look their position in league. You're giving energy and attention(what they want when you turn irrelevant) to a midtable club?

I'm reminding us why we hate them so much. Those days were awful. They deserve what's happening to them

Please don't give PGMOL any ideas 💀

On something like that, with no goal line tech and a goal line clearance, just give benefit of the doubt that it didn’t go in. No one’s going to complain. “Letter of the law” correct call though I guess, “spirit of the game” though, no way.

Also, terrible positioning for a ref anyways.

Goal doesn't stand, ref touches the ball it's a dropped ball.

On the contrary it's not enough

You have footballers making vastly more amounts who still risk everything on sports betting ... 240k isn't big enough to skew the risk vs reward calculus toward ethical outcomes

Nor is 240k big enough to encourage top talent to become referees ... instead you get stuck with underappreciated people who want power and have no other options to pursue in life

You can give them any salary it doesn’t matter as long as the management is incompetent nothing get better. You need accountability for your misstake if you get moved down for your misstake make a new bad misstake and get a top match next something is seriously ****ed up. Nothing any money can solve.

I disagree.

Paying these current incompetent refs more $$ isn't magically going to make them perform better. The entire organization has to be burnt to the ground and re-made into a proper organization that embraces meritocracy and transparency.

We do the above, then we can have a conversation about whether referees should be paid more.

I don't disagree with any of the above

My point is more theoretical -- i.e. in general, the pay needs to be high enough to attract the best talent and discourage bad behavior

240k doesn't achieve that in my opinion

Said another way, I can think of two potential reasons why the FA hasn't managed to sort out the obvious issues at PGMOL:

1) The supply of capable referees is too low given the wages being paid, so referees don't feel the pressure to hold themselves accountable (they have too much negotiating power)

2) The FA itself is corrupt -- I don't know enough about this to theorize intelligently
