Thomas Partey: Body Falling Apartey

From a purely cynical business perspective you could understand why Arsenal stuck with him; in form he was a top player, hugely important and hard to replace, at a time where Arsenal were turning things around in a competitive sense.

There's zero justification for keeping him around anymore, much less giving him a new contract. There isn't even sporting reason anymore, his current version is easily replaced.

Unless we're signing a new midfielder, there's not zero justification. If he's willing to take a big pay cut (which he probably isn't) then you can argue it's a smart decision. We don't have to spend tens of millions on a replacement for one, he knows the club and he's still pretty good. He's on the base of our midfield for six games now, and people aren't willing to give him any credit but he's doing quite well. Better than I'd expected.

That being said, I wouldn't be bothered if he left. My argument was that it's better to keep him over Jorginho, who's really on his final legs.

We are keeping him till the end of the season I believe. After Merino returns from injury I don't see him starting again, unless Rice has to be rested. His performance till now has been ok, but every time he has the ball I am a bit nervous not to make something stupid. It's the same feeling I get when watching Zini defend.
Better to let him go and find a proper replacement, externally or internally (Myles).

He doesn't have 90 minutes at top level in him anymore. As an emergency backup or part time squad player he'd be fine. But he'll have to accept a massive pay cut for that.
We'll see if he really likes the club, or if he likes money more. I wouldn't blame him if prefers one last big payday. Football careers are short and you have to get what you can.
He's pretty much played 90 minutes every time he's started this seaosn apart form Atalanta. I don't think he's emergency back up or part time, you'll still seeing him playing when Merino and Ødegaard are fit.

I don't trust him to keep this up though. Even if he by some miracle stays injury-free for the season, he looks like a player on his last legs.
I'll be surprised if we see a lot of Partey once Merino and Ødegaard are fit. I can see him as a late sub to close out games. But not much more.

I doubt he'll be first choice then. Merino offers more off the ball and on the ball IMO

They operate in different positions. Partey on the ball in the 6 is elite. Merino is 100% more consistent overall. I also think going forward our midfield will be Rice in his best position, Merino and Ødegaard in front of him with Merino playing the CM next to Rice out of possession. But to have Partey ( hopefully he stays fit full season ) as a bench option is quite strong.

Yes but Merino can play in a double pivot with Rice. He also brings in Partey's ability to be press resistant and pass between the lines. Like you say Rice, Merino, Ødegaard seem very complimentary and IMO will be first choice when all are fit. I imagine Merino although an 8 will also give Rice license to roam forward as both can sit and cover. I think when we lose possession Merino plus Rice should be a cheat code for turnovers

The smart thing to do is give him a 1 + 1 year contract. We can't loose him and Jorginho in the same year. That would be bad team management.

Arguably having players that old and slow would be bad team management too though. Lewis Skelly maybe able to provide midfield cover next year. Which means we may only need 1 new midfielder to replace Partey/Jorginho

If he could stay fit he would provide quality cover in midfield. The only problem then would be him being on starting player wages you can’t realistically pay someone 200k a week to be cover.

I understand what you are saying but we don't know how Lewis Skelly will turn out. I agree we need to buy a midfielder next season.

I don’t think he’s on his last legs, people want him to be worse than he actually is so watch with bias eyes.

If he was as bad as people say Arteta would drop him, but he’s actually been good this season so far.

Arsenal Quotes

No one could have imagined for a single second that he would come to us. Only David Dein, Sol, his agent, and I knew what was going on. When I called a press conference to announce the arrival of a new player, and Sol Campbell walked into the room full of journalists, it was a bombshell.
