Don’t think TP gets an extension by the way, he is too old now, on too high wages, etc, which all contribute to this not being a good idea.

We have MLS coming through, and would likely go into the market again on top of that. TP is playing for his move, and we’ll reap the benefits of that.

Arsenal and Tomiyasu agreed to a 1-year extension. Partey is injury-prone like Tomiyasu. He might be willing to do a similar 1-2 year deal. Partey might stay fit better if he plays less.

Jorginho has to leave next summer. Partey is younger, faster and better than him. Arsenal has a youngster like Lewis-Skelly coming through, but he is not likely ready for big minutes next year.

Arsenal extending Partey to a 2-year deal would mean he will be 33 years old by the end of it. Arsenal could give him 150-200k pounds per week for it to make a short deal attractive for Partey. He won't get similar amounts in other places with his history, other than Saudi's but he might want trophies in Europe. Any similar level player who would replace him, would earn similar amount plus a huge transfer fee.

Arsenal needs to buy a top attacker next year plus do at least 4 big contract renewals for Saka, Saliba, Gabriel and Trossard. It will require a lot of money. I'd hope Arsenal takes for example until December, seeing if Partey can finally stay fit. Then renew him with a short contract.

He is in the top 3 CMs in the league when he's on it, but you can never count on that with all his injuries and process of getting back in form when he recovers. Completely unreliable if he is not at his best

I think TP being extended has more to do with what the market has available mate

The positive is we’ve been able to do trial and error to find out what the best position is for a few players in our squad and still be in a title race.

Happened last season with Havertz/Rice and I’m assuming it’ll be the case with our fullbacks and Merino. Kind of sums up our squad depth at the moment whereby an injury or two won’t really hinder our progress compared to last season.

There could have been questions on Rice's abilities and what would be developed to fit the team, and there could be a reaction to that with TP's extension. But believe me, they knew what they were bringing in.

Not the type. But a players true level. If you look at all the players that cost more than 100 million. Very few has been value for money. It’s not unusual clubs bring in a player and he is not as good as they hoped for. Again our transfer record before Rice essentially flopped

Most 100m+ signings have been underwhelming though, I don't think money spent is a fair way to judge the clubs intentions.

However I do agree the club knew what they were getting, we signed Rice because he's one of the best ball winners and you know how important winning duels is to Arteta and Rice might be the best in the world at that.

I believe they didn’t look into his previous midfield partners enough. KWP, Soucek etc.

Otherwise they would have never have paired him with an experimental Havertz. This suggests to me that they did overestimate certain aspects to his game even if just a tad.

You just can't compare a desperate buy when Arsenal was in the mud, and not attractive to players, to Rice who even City wanted. Arteta wasn't at the club, plus Raul Sanllehi was pulling the strings. Completely different situations.

Rice is 2,5 years younger than Rodri, and has been an amazing buy. Those who have eyes can see it. Rodri is a unicorn player, and Rice is already close enough to his level being younger.

Complete midfielders like Vieira or Rodri are so rare that if you can be even close to that, you're a great success and top of the game.

Extending Partey mostly relates to the financial situation with all the other needs, and important contract renewals coming. And Lewis-Skelly development and path. Because of these, it's not easy to get rid of both Jorginho and Partey in the same window. Especially as the FFP limits I think are getting stricter year by year now.

Partey was supposed to start a lot more last season, along with Jorginho. Havertz played a lot more LCM last season than planned because of injuries to both, especially at the start of the season. We saw that it changed when players were fit.

There is not enough money to do everything in one window. Havertz was a great buy because of his versatility. It was just something that needed to be done for a year, and now they got their proper Xhaka replacement for cheap when Merino had a year in contract. Merino was likely talked to already last summer, and planned for.

Let’s be honest. When we signed Rice 15 months ago. Did anyone expect more than what we seen so far? I know I did.

For me Rice has been as good or better than expected, straight from the beginning. He hit the ground running, which is not a given for anyone in a new team. There is zero problems with his fee, and there has been talk that he was even cheap in current markets.

What you might think is only Rice's fault in his performances, I think is related to who he has had to play with thus far.

The LB side has had constant injuries and change of personnel. Someone like Kiwior is not at the required level for inverted LB role. Same goes for Havertz at LCM. But these are related to injuries, and gradual development of the squad regarding FFP limits.

You will see that Rice will fit the squad perfectly, when the LB is either Calafiori or Timber. Plus when the LCM is Merino, or when someone of Partey's level plays at the same time when Rice is LCM. This will transform the left side and also benefit Martinelli.

It will mean that there are two more players who can build up the play much better. Plus Rice doesn't have to cover Zinchenko's lack of defensive skills and pace.
