Thomas Partey: Total Eclipse Of The Part-ey

I have hammered rice for a while whilst this guy has slipped the net. He was shocking against casemiro and Bruno. He cannot play twice a week, the chemistry simply is not there with Rice. It's one or the other and we need someone who can play twice a week to a good standard.

Is his last season as starter, this is something that doesn't worth to discuss. If he renews one more year it will be as squad option but I don't think it will happen. The problem I see is who is going to play next to Rice. Arteta is so stubborn it could end playing Havertz as LCM if we bring another CF resulting in once again an unbalanced midfield where Rice is not good enough to progress the ball and Havertz just bombing the box but contributing nothing to create chances so again we play everything from the right and the left player whoever it is will be isolated.

Agree with that. It's mad how quickly we moved on from zinny/xhaka/martenelli combo which worked. We forget how good xhaka was at dropping to cover for zinny.

Think Rice and Partey have a good chrmistry. If anything our win percentage is significantly higher when they both play

Its crazy really in retrospect. I remember everyone thought Xhaka leaving was going to be the final piece of the puzzle to a championship team as his replacement was going to be so much more effective in that left mid role.

200 million later and we still haven't got close to finding a replacement for Xhaka and the Arsenal left side has struggled since.

I think moving Xhaka to the left mid was actually one of the few master strokes that Arteta deserves complete credit for.

We got better after Xhaka left, more points on the board and honestly Rice is much better than him.

Arsenal fans need to stop the revionist history with Xhaka, the guy was awful and had one good season here. He only played well when playing with Partey he was single handedly losing us games for like 5 years straight before that.

He was playing a different position earlier on. The best our attack has ever looked on the left under Arteta was with him in the left 8. He did a reasonable job for the inverting fullback defensively also.

I wasnt a fan but cant say we have seen any better without him there.

Yeh very revisionist. I would argue he was good under Arteta in general though, for 2 years. His first year under him he played deeper but was making less mistakes. And then he was really good in the more advanced position where he didn’t need to think about defending and press resistance as much. Helped Martinelli perfectly and also underlapped a lot with some dangerous crosses into the box.

But yeh I agree. Arsenal fans speak about him like he was some sort of world class player. The fact is we have replaced him with worse players in the position such as Havertz and Merino. It’s not hard to look good when you’re comparing him to those players.

If we bought a Macallister type like we should have, there wouldn’t be a contest here.

I guess....rice, havertz and merino have all attempted to fill that more forward role without the same success. As i said he wasnt great for a majority of his time at arsenal but still underrated in that last year. The fact we thought it was a given that the team would improve on the left without him says it all.

And he went to Leverkusen who became unbeaten double winners in his first season there. How many times are you going to repeat that "more points" rubbish as if there was a 1 to 1 correlation there. We got more goals with Havertz up front than we ever did with Henry is he a better striker too.

Not even saying Xhaka should've stayed mind Arteta somehow fluked a good season out of him playing #8 but his best position by far he was could have never got him to work in.

Why not? Xhaka was a donkey under Emery. Arteta certainly got the best Xhaka we had at Arsenal out of 3 managers. 1 of the 2 seasons I speak about was actually in a deeper role. He was good, made less errors, but wasn’t taking the world by storm.

Arteta has not improved as many players as we would have liked especially in the attack, but there’s no debate for me that he got the best out of Xhaka in the PL.

He simply was not good enough or suited to working as a lone DLP in the PL in the kind of system we wanna play. There are more suitable players.

In the PL sure but Xhaka at Leverkusen is several levels ahead as a DLP. Don't think it's down to the league either he simply has the right partners in midfield an on the wing to maximise his strengths and mask his weaknesses.

Yep think it’s a mixture of the league + the players being deployed around him.

We never really got the midfield right balance wise at the start, and even now we have gone too much the other way and too defensive and physical.

I do also think that Xhaka got some confidence and became a better player in his last 2 years here which carried through to Leverkusen, as well as ageing liking a fine wine like maybe deep CMs do.

Watching this clown try to defend Real on the break is going to be painful viewing.
