I don't understand why we would sell him.
He didn't have a great season, but if that was the criteria for getting rid of a player, we wouldn't have many left.

The other factor is, if we sold him for around 10m, there is no way we are going to get as good as player as he is, and we will probably buy a cheap potentially good player, like we usually do.

He can't be that bad, all the clubs linked with him are fairly big clubs. All he needs is to get back a bit of confidence and we have a decent player again.

I don't understand why we would sell him.

As I said, I think an offer will come in that he and us cant turn down, thats why we would sell him. Players that are unsettled or appear to be unsettled, always attract other clubs, so offers will come. Ashley Williams would be about the same price, so we can replace Vermaelen quite easily, in fact as a CB Williams is better.

If he truly knew his qualities, he should be terrified.

That's what we all wanted to see .. the fighting spirit! Vermaelen has quality, some bad games and unlucky injuries has seen him fallen from the pecking order.

Only worry is the board wants $$ more than anything else.

Buying 1 more CB is not excessive, every good top club have 4 CB at least, Verminator could be even move to DM too... we'll need some games to try out and give him game time as it was too critical last season to let someone try to find his form.
