Man Utd and Arsenal prepare loan bids for Barcelona's Thomas Vermaelen
MANCHESTER UNITED and Arsenal are preparing loan moves for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The former Gunners star swapped the Premier League for La Liga in a £15million deal during the summer despite being linked with a move to Old Trafford, but injuries have prevented him from making his debut under Luis Enrique.

Vermaelen has only just returned to first-team training, but knows that he will struggle to break past Javier Mascherano, Jeremy Mathieu and Gerard Pique for a place in the starting line-up.

Barcelona are still keen on keeping the Belgium international, and reports claim that the Catalans are willing to send Vermaelen out on loan for the remainder of the season in order to build up his core strength and fitness.

The 29-year-old's availability has alerted United and Arsenal, who are both struggling with injuries in defence, and Vermaelen could find himself back in familiar territory this winter on a short-term deal.

**** news that, got respect for Vermaelen and how he handled his last year here, glad he left with a trophy as well. He wasn't good enough for us and he isn't good enough for Barca but to not even have played for them yet is sad to see.

Have they ever signed a player from us who went on to be huge for them? Henry certainly won trophies with them but they definitely never got anything near his best while they wasted Cesc. Gio van Bronckhorst seems to be the only who wasn't overpriced and did a job for them lol.
