So here it is…

5th May 2009

The biggest movies of the year were Inglorious Basterds, Avatar and the Hurt Locker. Dizzee Rascal and Kanye West (ahem) dominated the charts and David Cameron was still sat in opposition.

Lionel Messi was about to win his first Ballon d’Or AND Arsenal last played in the semi finals of a Champions League. We’ve waited almost 16 years… so many false dawns and even a half decade in the footballing wilderness of the Europa League but now…

WE’RE BACK!

You have to go even further back for our last winning semi final effort with this heart stopper against Villarreal in 2006.

That’s right almost 20 years since that famous night in the then Madrigal. Hopefully the spirit of Jens won’t be needed by Raya over the two legs…

Predicted Team

After the last round the line-up pretty much sets itself. The big hope is that both Merino and White come through their injury scares.

Whilst obviously it’s Merino who’s most important the bench is looking very light with this game probably arriving too soon for Calafiori and Jorginho even though they should be back for the return leg.

The threat of the team depending on whether it’s Trossard or Merino up front is night and day. In a few short weeks Merino has proven to be our signing of the season raking with both goals and assists.

The Opposition

After defeating the biggest name in club football in the quarter finals we now face probably the most in form.

From the new year they’ve won 23, drawn 2 and lost 2 with those two losses coming in legs against Villa and Liverpool when they still managed to progress regardless.

Now whilst as per usual they have steamrollered Ligue 1 their form in the CL has been iffy. A lot of people point to their form post January when they’ve comprehensively slapped up City (although so did we and even Real Madrid managed it) and Stuggart but to my eyes they have looked very uncertain at times against Villa and Liverpool.

Villa in particular had them fully on the ropes looking dazed and PSG needed a dodgy injury time allocation to really get them over the line.

PSG are one of the four other clubs that our manager has played for, and we have an unbeaten record against them having won twice and drawn three of our previous competitive matches, a record we extended earlier this season in the Group Stage when we comprehensively put them away.

Notice both goals coming from crosses… set pieces have proven to be a constant weakness for them this year so hopefully Joever has been cooking something up in the lab.

There are a few former players who’ve played for both clubs ranging from the ridiculous (David Luiz and Kaba Diawara) to the sublime with our once upon a time teenage phenom Nicolas Anelka sandwiching his time at Arsenal and Real between two stints with the Parisians.

Danger Man

extended. Again this isn’t necessarily the star studded PSG team that’s so embarrassingly flattered to deceive in Europe over the years.

Gone are the “Galacticos” of Neymar, Mbappe, Messi, Ramos and Cavani now replaced with a glittering array of youngsters such as Zaire-Emery, Barcola and in particular Desire Doue who looks scarily good.

We could also say Kvaratskhelia who’s arrival in January has coincided with a higher level for PSG but in terms of danger men it has to be the man with more goals than starts this year…

Ousmane Dembele who has been in frightening form in both Ligue 1 and Champions League.

Watching the PSG game right now and all I ask for is MLS in midfield as I think he’ll run riot with the amount of space they’ll leave in there.

Hopefully Dembouz has one of those performances when he shoots like he has sandals on.

Partey is suspended for this.

Would probably be

…………………Raya……………..

Timber …. saliba …. kiwior……Lewis-skelly

…………..….Rice ……merino……………

…………………..Ødegaard………..

Saka ………. Trossard………… martinelli

4 players that started the group stage game for us won’t be starting on Tuesday due to various reasons

Gabriel, calafiori, Partey, Harvetz.

I am predicting a 2:0 win, same as the group stage game.

Saka, Saliba from a corner

Nice to see a non-temu thread for this one.

Knowing Arteta he will pick the safe option with M9 in midfield and Trossard up front, which is probably for the best.

Already excited for this one. We're going to miss Partey big time, probably will see Merino in midfield and Trossard up front, which makes us much weaker imo.

We need to win really. Going there needing a result isn't good, they're better than Madrid.

Nice is showing us how it's done, they're currently 1-3 up in Paris.

The big one - A well deserved return to a Champions League Semi-final for our boys after a long hiatus. PSG have yet to win in five competitive games against us (D3 L2). In addition to our group stage triumph against them, previous encounters include another semi-final, in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, in which we prevailed by virtue of a 1-0 home win following a 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes.

Partey's suspension will hurt, but expect Merino to drop into his position and Trossard to start alongside Martinelli and Saka.

Let's do our club and fans proud, carry the momentum from Madrid and continue to wreak havoc on the uncontrollable emotions of the media and our rivals

First of all approach the game with cool mindset no fear PSG are not real Madrid they ain't mess and have good manager thier defense is not much Saka and Martinelli should take advantage of how Hakimi and Mendes will leave space.

Our defense need to be on alert always PSG have more organized and hard working attack.

It's really frustrating we missing Thomas here it'll force us to put merino as LCM and Trossard as CF. Because we really bullied thier midfield when we played them in first phase

I think it'll be same squad as vs Madrid, but with Merino in LCM and Trossard upfront.

The fall off with Trossard is monumental. There’s no box presence or threat to the CBs.

He just constantly comes short… would rather Zinchenko play than use Merino in midfield.

It seems they are suffering from the same lacklustreness we did in midweek in their 3-1 loss to Nice earlier, they sacrificed an invincibles season for our game. Both our and their players are gonna be energized to hell and back on Tuesday.

Must keep Timber and MLS on the where they are to take care of their wingers. Zincenko would be a disaster. After that I am open to suggestions. But likely means Merino at CM and Trossard up top. And Saliba better keep his concentration levels at MAX.

I think you put Timber on lb and White rb for this one. You don’t break up the Saliba Kiwior partnership in such an important game. And Merinos presence up front is critical against a team that struggles with crosses and set pieces.

If I see trossard in the starting line up, I’m turning the tv off

So either Merino drops into midfield or we disrupt the backline to keep him at 9. Tough one considering we might not have Benny Blanco and Kiwi at LB isn’t great either.

Think Mikel will play Trossard and Merino drops back.

Very worried about this, though at least I can legitimately blame Partey if we lose after his idiotic booking in the Madrid away game!

I would trust Skelly in midfield here, think he could dominate physically in there and it keeps Merino up front...but feel Mikel will put Mikel 2 in midfield and Leo up top, smh.

Either way, 2-1 to The Arsenal, Saka winner!

I think without doubt that Bergkamp is the most talented player to have played for Arsenal in the past 30 years, for as long as I can remember
