❗️ Insights from a Portuguese journalist

Hi everyone. I’m not an Arsenal fan, although I like the club. But what I want to share here is more important than that.

I’m a Portuguese journalist working for one of the biggest sports media outlets in Portugal. Unfortunately, due to restrictions and pressure from powerful people in Portuguese football, we’re not allowed to publish the full truth about the Victor Gyokeres negotiations with Arsenal. So I’m sharing it here.

Here are the facts:

  1. The Promise:
After the 2023/24 season, Gyokeres received several offers from Premier League clubs. Sporting CP’s president, Frederico Varandas, convinced him to stay one more season by promising he could leave in the summer of 2025 for €60 million—if he helped Sporting win another league title.
  2. The Deal with Arsenal:
At the end of the 2024/25 season, Arsenal entered serious talks with both Sporting and Gyokeres’ agent. A deal was agreed: €60 million plus bonuses. Sporting even gave Arsenal permission to negotiate personal terms with the player. By May, everything was in place.
  3. The Backtrack:
Suddenly, Sporting changed its position. Why? Because Jorge Mendes wanted in. Sporting still owes him money from previous deals. Mendes offered to sell Gyokeres to other clubs like Manchester United or Atlético Madrid for a higher fee. In return, he would take a 10% commission and forgive part of Sporting’s debt to him. He also promised to help Sporting sign players they were targeting, like Alberto Costa from Juventus and Luis Suárez from Almería.
  4. Gyokeres Stands Firm:
Gyokeres and his agent were furious when Sporting pulled out of the Arsenal deal. Varandas tried to pressure him into accepting a move to Manchester United, but the player refused. He only wants Arsenal.
  5. Sporting Now Stuck:
With no progress on a deal with other clubs and needing to sign a new striker urgently, Sporting is now being forced to go back to Arsenal and finalize the original agreement, with some minor changes.
  6. The Media Silence:
Why isn’t any of this being reported? Because the Portuguese sports media is deeply corrupt. Frederico Varandas is close friends with the directors and owners of Lisbon’s main sports newspapers, who in turn are close to Jorge Mendes. That’s how influence works here. Smaller media outlets tend to be more independent and honest, but they don’t have the reach.

This is the real story behind the scenes. I felt it was important to make it public.

Thank for you that, makes a lot of sense.

We have noticed Record being crazy and spreading sensationalist headlines throughout this saga, Abola also if I remember correctly. Is this due to the reason you explain, the ties to Varandas etc?

Super agents are leeches. In many cases it seems they are taking money from transactions akin to a gangster taking a % cut from everything happening on their patch.

Sounds like Mendes has thrown his weight around big time here. And it has meant that Arsenal have lost out timing wise, as well as Gyokeres + his agent money wise.

Thanks for sharing, it provides big light over some absurd developments and reporting all over the place in past week.

It’s not impossible to go through a season unbeaten and I can’t see why it’s shocking to say that.
