So you think we signed Gyokeres with the expectation he’d stand next to defenders and occupy them? Not score goals as an out and out CF?
We signed him to galvanize the fanbase and create belief amongst fans.
We needed a markee CF signing, and he was the one. It worked, the window closed, everybody was excited and the fanbase stood behind both the manager and the new director. It was an intelligent and needed piece of business.

If he can give us 30+ games and double-figure goals, we are set for his first season.

It is a strange time.

Arsenal, one of the best teams in the world, with elite proven players everywhere need to adapt their game round a CF who’s highest league experience prior is the Championship, Liga Portugal is ranked below, at 27 years old.

Which do the Arsenal fans back?
No one is saying that we need to adapt.

We are saying he is not going to be a 30+ goals a season striker, and if you were expecting then your bar is way too high.

if we get 15 goals from him, we should be happy; even 10 goals would make him a good signing.

Those lists of strikers banging them in and looking crap elsewhere like Bas Dost and whatnot are starting to look concerning, portugese league tax might be pretty real.

I'm not gonna pile on this guy yet but it's not looking good bruv.

I think the worst part for me is I thought he was a bit of a physical beast because I read before we signed him that he had a 35 km/h max speed which would be martinelli esque so I thought if he was quick and powerful he'd get chances kinda like a temu Haaland but in reality he looks slow, slower than Havertz I'd say.
According to Opta, portuguese league is worse than Championship

We try those balls but they don't work out because Gyokeres just doesn't have the pace.

I read an interview of Woltemade in the German media and he said that the
Premier League is "a different world" because unlike in the Bundesliga, every CB is "at least 1.90 and runs 34km/h"

Gyokeres just looks outmatched in this environment, if you don't have the pace or technical ability to create space for yourself, how on earth are you going to score?

We rarely play in balls, he gets 1.5 shots per game because we don't create for him. This is Ødegaard refusing to release the ball to him about 20 times:

As for pace, I'm not Gyokeres is at peak fitness with us yet but:

Gyokeres
  • 36.2 km/h: A potential max speed recorded in the Champions League.
Halaand

Erling Haaland's top recorded speed is approximately 36.9 km/h (22.9 mph), which was clocked during a UEFA Champions League match.
In the current 2024-2025 Premier League season, his top speed recorded so far is 35.7 km/h.

the only chance gyokeres can produce goals if Ødegaard stay higher up the pitch (atleast he need receive ball in middle third NOT receive ball in our defensive third),

so that will make Ødegaard more closer behind gyokeres & can give through ball to him just like this video below

actually gyokeres can give option to arteta like play more direct with through ball but unfortunately arteta barely want use style like that especially arteta is not risk taker

so i dont know why arteta still keep his u-shape football when gyokeres play, it does not make sense because that u-shape style is not suit gyokeres strength

Max speed literally means nothing, football is about acceleration. Gyokeres doesn't have it.
I could make a compilation like that with Haaland as well. Strikers make a million runs which are "ignored" every single game, life of a striker.

Ode ultimately did put Trossard on through for a 1v1 with the keeper there, so probably not the best example.

The problem with Gyök so far is that he stands too close to defenders and isn't able to shake them off by strength or agility. In that video, for example, it took him time to separate himself from the defender and Ode ended up missing that split second. Ode does have this issue right now but it goes two ways, Gyök is rarely in the position to get it.

I think you could find a decent compilation of attempted through balls to Gyok but he just gets outpaced or outmuscled by the defender every time
you will so struggle to find that but you can easily find compilation our player ignore him when he make run

So where do we go from here?
great question that also pop in my mind last night

here is the thing, so the goal this season is arsenal has to win premier league which mean as long as arteta system (using false nine style) can give us premier league title then for me no problem when arteta does not want change his system & even for me no problem gyokeres stay on the bench while merino or jesus play at cf

so far arteta made great decision using merino as false nine, then go on keep that until we win premier league

Persist for the rest of the season with Gyok, Kai, Jesus and Merino.

Arteta has obviously set the team up to have a uniform attacking threat across the pitch (if not somewhat weighted to the RHS). As long as we have Gyok or Kai fit and they can do the pressing/fighting the CBs we can continue with our current style. I think if theyre all out and we have to play GJ, other than his fitness issues, we will need a style change which isn't optimal mid season.

Long term, look for young high potential CF we can mould into something that would eventually elevate the team.

The "win now" mentality with that position, which I totally understood at the time btw, landed us with a second rate player like Gyok to plug a gap.

The squad is so strong now we can afford to take a long term strategic outlook for the CF and LW positions. Go for high potential if an actual "win now" option isn't available.

Meh, he was mediocre as always.
People started saying it was the end of his purple patch as that’s what it looked like. He got saved by the injury and claims of being run into the ground which are the same ‘excuses’ people won’t tolerate for Gyok.

The A in A-M doesn’t stand for Arsenal I’ll tell you that.

the problem is Ødegaard, not the striker. he is too slow to release the ball and doesnt occupy the front centre of the pitch

Kai is basically the reason we got dumped out of the both cups in January and February.

Arsenal Quotes

I still have an interest in training and development, in the stages that make it possible for players first to acquire technique (between 7 and 12) and then to develop physically (between 12 and 16), then to deepen their mental resilience (between 17 and 19) and finally between 19 and 22 to acquire what is critical, like the roof of a house without which all the rest rots away: intelligence and motivation
