Mbappe definitely but yes it's a rarity, especially in the modern game where your time on the ball is so insanely limited.

But it all depends on how you define "creating chances for yourself" anyway. Personally I'd argue world class off the ball work does just that and at that point you can throw in a striker like Haaland, he's not just banging in goals because his teams are showering him with opportunities, it's all in his movement and physical tools.

If the argument is the player needs to be able to get the ball to his feet and then consistently create something out of nothing, then yeah that's not going to happen at the highest club level anymore. If you're that good, you're going to be swarmed.

I like this answer a lot, it's well written but I especially like this. I just don't know what people mean when they say this.

Me personally, I feel like we need prime Benzema under Aeteta - a guy that does everything to a WC level and I have not seen much over the years to dissuade me. So when I have seen people pile on whoever plays upfront I can't take it seriously.

I guess i could have been more clear about what i meant by creating your own chances. Top strikers create their own chances by movement/positioning (attacking space where you can receive a pass/cross in a scoring position) , dribbling ability (being able to beat a defender or create shooting opportunities in the box with deft touches/dexterity), physical dominance (outmuscling defenders to create scoring opportunities), and plain predatorial instincts (anticipating where a loose ball will fall..etc)..

None of which Gyokeres has displayed with any meaningful level of proficiency or consistency. There are plenty of strikers who can do one or many of these things.

Not really , its says top quartile (specifically 85% percentile for NpG) in his "best stats" which isn't impressive at all, assuming 300 strikers (average 3 strikers per team, 20 teams per league) in the top 5 league then there are 45 strikers who scored at a higher rate than him

Like I said many times, even his best stats aren't impressive at all, world class strikers lie within the 95%-99% percentile in MULTIPLE metrics and he doesn't lie there in any metric mentioned, being in the top quartile (top 25%) for any metric isn't impressive enough for a big team

Hopefully, he’ll improve and get fitter this season, if we keep him.

He played a lot of matches and seemed very heavy at times. I don’t think his body was ready for the defensive responsibilities and physical demands of English football. He often looked completely knackered when he finally got the ball in good positions.
